Lithological and glacial controls on sulfide weathering and the associated CO2 budgets in the Tibetan Plateau: New constraints from small catchments

Wenjing Liu et al.

Summary: Sulfide oxidation is the main source of stream sulfate in small catchments in the Tibetan Plateau, and it plays an important role in carbon dioxide release. The sulfide oxidation rate is 5 times higher in glacial catchments compared to non-glacial catchments, and the carbon dioxide release rate from sulfate-driven carbonate dissolution is 3 times higher in metasedimentary catchments compared to granitic catchments.

Use of stable Mg isotope ratios in identifying the base cation sources of stream water in the boreal Krycklan catchment (Sweden)

Bolou Emile Bolou-Bi et al.

Summary: The study used stable Mg isotopes to identify potential sources of base cations in stream water in the Krycklan catchment in Sweden. Results show that magnesium in the streamwater mainly derives from groundwater, with a significant contribution during snowmelt periods. Open field rain dominates during spring floods and larger summer and autumn rainfall events. Soil solution input also contributes significantly to magnesium fluxes in streamwater.

Weathering stage and topographic control on rare earth element (REE) behavior: New constraints from a deeply weathered granite hill

Wenjing Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the distribution patterns of rare earth elements (REE) in deeply weathered granite on a subtropical hillslope were investigated. The results showed that the distribution of REE was mainly influenced by changes in environmental parameters and mineral transformation during weathering. The hilltop soil profile had the strongest LREE depletion and the highest positive Ce anomaly.

Phyllosilicate controls on magnesium isotopic fractionation during weathering of granites: Implications for continental weathering and riverine system

Martin Yan Hei Li et al.

Summary: Continental weathering plays a crucial role in releasing magnesium from rocks to the hydrosphere and biosphere. Magnesium isotopes can be used as a powerful tool to trace the biogeochemical cycle of magnesium, but the causes of significant isotopic fractionation during silicate weathering are not well understood. This study demonstrates that the dissolution and formation of phyllosilicates are the main factors controlling magnesium isotopic fractionation during sub-tropical weathering of granite, and different mechanisms of formation and dissolution could cause variations in fractionation.

Sulfur dynamics in forest soil profiles developed on granite under contrasting climate conditions

Zhuojun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study examines sulfur dynamics in forest soil profiles developed on granite, using stable sulfur isotope ratios to trace sources and biogeochemical processes of sulfur. Results show that colder/drier climate leads to high organic sulfur retention at the surface, while warmer/wetter climate increases sulfur mineralization and leaching loss. Overall, the study highlights the important role of climatic and edaphic variables in sulfur dynamics in granite forest soils.
