Efficient estimation and optimization of building costs using machine learning

T. Q. D. Pham et al.

Summary: This study provides a fast and accurate machine learning and optimization framework for estimating building costs and improving operational efficiency and competitiveness of a construction company. The trained models accurately estimate building costs and required resources, and can determine optimal building costs under a given budget. The study demonstrates the efficient use of machine learning models in the construction sector for cost optimization and data-driven management.

CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE RISK ANALYSIS - A HYBRID MACHINE LEARNING APPROACH

John Patrick Fitzsimmons et al.

Summary: The UK spends billions of pounds on infrastructure construction works annually, but more than half of them are delayed, causing stakeholders' interests to be compromised. This research introduces a hybrid method to improve the accuracy of risk analysis and prediction of project delays, by combining machine intelligence with a large database of completed infrastructure construction projects in the UK. The results show a 54.4% increase in accuracy in predicting project delays compared to traditional methods.

Forecasting Liquidated Damages via Machine Learning-Based Modified Regression Models for Highway Construction Projects

Odey Alshboul et al.

Summary: This study proposes a modified regression modeling method using machine learning techniques to predict liquidated damages (LDs) in construction projects. The method is evaluated using real datasets and shows high accuracy in predicting LDs. The developed prediction models provide decision-makers with better LDs forecasts, which are crucial for the sustainability of construction projects.

Optimized machine learning modelling for predicting the construction cost and duration of tunnelling projects

Arsalan Mahmoodzadeh et al.

Summary: Predicting the duration and cost of tunnelling projects is crucial for determining the effectiveness of a decision-making system. Research on these factors can serve as a valid basis for contract negotiation and construction optimization. Four machine learning techniques were employed, with linear regression performing the best in predicting duration and cost.

Evaluating the Impact of External Support on Green Building Construction Cost: A Hybrid Mathematical and Machine Learning Prediction Approach

Odey Alshboul et al.

Summary: External support is crucial for cost forecasting in green building, but there is a lack of practical models to determine the impact of external public and private support on project costs. This research develops a mathematical model to explore the balance of supply and demand under deflationary conditions for external green construction support. The findings show that public and private investments can decrease the cost of green buildings.

Machine Learning-Based Model for Predicting the Shear Strength of Slender Reinforced Concrete Beams without Stirrups

Odey Alshboul et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of concrete mix properties on the shear strength of slender structured concrete beams without stirrups (SRCB-WS) and develops a gene expression-based model to estimate their shear strength. Through statistical evaluation of the collected data, the proposed model is found to outperform the current design code in terms of performance.

Data-Driven Machine Learning Approach to Integrate Field Submittals in Project Scheduling

Mohamad Awada et al.

Summary: This paper explains how machine learning techniques can be used to mine construction project data and forecast project delays, using concrete pouring requests as an example and implementing a random forest predictive model to predict the likelihood of acceptance for these requests. The proposed method includes an analysis for adding probabilistic time delays associated with rejected requests, and was tested on a real-world case study showing a 10% difference between project duration estimates based on critical path method (CPM) with static buffers and those obtained using the proposed method.
