Effect of bond exchange rate on dynamics and mechanics of vitrimers

Alessandro Perego et al.

Summary: Thermoset polymers are difficult to recycle due to their permanent crosslinks. Vitrimers, with dynamic covalent bonds, offer recyclability. The study uses a hybrid MD-MC technique to simulate adaptive networks, showing that adjusting energy difference affects dynamic and mechanical properties, and a higher number of exchanges results in larger deformation and more homogenous stress distribution in vitrimers.

Recyclable High-Performance Epoxy-Anhydride Resins with DMP-30 as the Catalyst of Transesterification Reactions

Wenzhe Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a simple method to prepare readily recyclable epoxy resins by incorporating 2,4,6-tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (DMP-30) into the epoxy-glutaric anhydride (GA) system. The resulting resins have properties similar to conventional epoxy resins, without the need for expensive, toxic, and poorly compatible catalysts. The study also explores the effects of GA content, DMP-30 content, and temperature on the dissolution rate of the resins.

Ammar Mustafa et al.

Summary: The study focused on utilizing additive manufacturing technology to develop multi-material components with different structures. Mechanical properties were evaluated through compression, bending, and tensile tests, showing that incorporating 5% volume of glass fibers (MGFs) in the TMS resulted in significantly improved performance. Cone-beam CT scan and high-resolution scanning electron microscope were used to observe voids and microstructural evolution in the developed materials.

The effect of matrix on shape properties of aromatic disulfide based epoxy vitrimers

Itxaso Azcune et al.

Summary: Aromatic disulfide-based vitrimers demonstrate elasticity-driven shape-memory and plastic reprocessability through the rearrangement of dynamic covalent crosslinks. The key temperatures for triggering phase transition and disulfide exchange reaction are highly sensitive to the molecular structure of the polymer. The relationship between structure, dynamics, and shape-changing properties was investigated through the synthesis of five networks with varying T-g values, molecular structures, and crosslink densities.

Recycling Thermoset Epoxy Resin Using Alkyl-Methyl-Imidazolium Ionic Liquids as Green Solvents

Rocio L. Perez et al.

Summary: A solvent-based green recycling procedure using ionic liquids and alcohols was reported for the recycling of thermoset epoxy resins and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites under mild conditions. The study evaluated the swelling and depolymerization capacity of the materials in the presence of different alkyl-methyl-imidazolium ILs and alcohols. Complete dissolution of both TERs and CFRECs was achieved in 150 minutes at 150 degrees Celsius under atmospheric pressure. Recovery and reuse of the recycled monomer after dissolution were also examined, demonstrating similar mechanical properties to the parent TER and successful recovery of carbon fibers from CFRECs.

Zongke He et al.

Summary: A new strategy for preparing elastomeric vitrimer based on EPR was proposed in this study, using a dynamic imine bond-based cross-linking network. The cross-linking density and mechanical properties of the material could be adjusted by varying the aldehyde group content or the aldehyde/TREA ratio. The activation energy of the cross-linking reaction was calculated to be 57.2 kJ mol(-1), providing the cross-linked network with good plasticity and recyclability.
