Mechanical, rheological, and crystallinity properties of polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol-polydimethylsiloxane copolymer blends by melt blending

Wenying Shi et al.

Summary: Polyethylene glycol-polydimethylsiloxane copolymer (PEG-PDMS) was incorporated into polylactic acid (PLA) via melt blending to improve its toughness and transparency, resulting in increased elongation at break and tensile strength, as well as enhanced crystallinity. Additionally, the energy storage modulus and complex viscosity of the blends were improved. However, the light transmittance slightly decreased.

Design of biodegradable PLA/PBAT blends with balanced toughness and strength via interfacial compatibilization and dynamic vulcanization

Xiaonan Chen et al.

Summary: Super-toughened and high-strength PLA/PBAT blends were successfully prepared by interfacial compatibilization and dynamic vulcanization with small amounts of ESA. The compatibilization was achieved by grafting PLA and PBAT chains onto ESA backbones, generating PLA-graft-PBAT copolymers at the blend interface. The vulcanization led to highly cross-linked PBAT particles with a network-like distribution in the PLA matrix, resulting in improved toughness and strength.

Physical, mechanical, viscoelastic, and morphological properties of poly(lactic acid)/ethylene-co-vinyl acetate blend reinforced with silicon carbide nanoparticles

Sahar Arezoumand et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phase morphology, mechanical properties, melting and crystallinity, as well as the dynamic viscoelastic properties of PLA/EVA (80/20) blends containing 0-3 wt% nano-SiC. The addition of nano-SiC resulted in a decrease in the size of the EVA dispersed phase and an increase in the elastic moduli and yield stress of the nanocomposites. The nano-SiC particles also acted as nucleating agents for the crystallization of the PLA matrix. The changes in the properties of the nanocomposites were attributed to the alteration in phase morphology and physical interactions between the nano-SiC particles and blend components.

Use of crosslinking agent to produce high-performance PLA/EVA blends via reactive processing

Eduardo da Silva Barbosa Ferreira et al.

Summary: By using ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a crosslinking agent, PLA/EVA blends were successfully produced. The addition of DCP significantly improved the impact strength and elongation at break of the blends, resulting in super-tough materials. This promising result, comparable to engineering polymers and blends, is attributed to the in situ compatibilizer PLA-g-EVA, which resulted in a homogeneous morphology as evidenced by SEM images.

Production of PLA/NR blends compatibilized with EE-g-GMA and POE-g-GMA: an investigation of mechanical, thermal, thermomechanical properties and morphology

Edson Antonio dos Santos Filho et al.

Summary: Blends of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and natural rubber (NR) were modified by elastomeric ethylene grafted with glycidyl methacrylate (EE-g-GMA) and poly(ethylene octene) grafted with glycidyl methacrylate(POE-g-GMA) to enhance the toughness of PLA. The addition of 10% NR increased the impact strength by 77%. Incorporating 10% of EE-g-GMA and POE-g-GMA in the blends resulted in significant increases in impact strength, with gains of 256% and 250% respectively. The developed blends exhibited ductile behavior, and the thermal stability was maintained.

A comparison of evolution of adhesion mechanisms and strength post damp-heat aging for a range of VA content in EVA encapsulant with photovoltaic backsheet

Umang Desai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the change in adhesion strength for different ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) films with varying vinyl acetate (VA) content after damp-heat ageing. It was found that the adhesion strength improved for EVA with 18% VA content, but deteriorated for EVA with 33% and 40% VA content after ageing. However, the adhesion strength remained unaffected for EVA with 24% VA content after ageing.

Summary: In this study, POE-g-GMA and EE-g-GMA were used as impact modifiers to improve the properties of PLA. The addition of 10% EE-g-GMA and POE-g-GMA significantly increased the impact strength of PLA, resulting in higher crystallinity for the blends. The modifiers POE-g-GMA and EE-g-GMA also improved the thermal stability of the blends.

Annealing Effect on Pla/Eva Blends Performance

Eduardo da Silva Barbosa Ferreira et al.

Summary: The research found that blending EVA and annealing treatment can significantly improve the performance of polylactic acid (PLA), including increased crystallinity, higher elastic modulus and hardness, but at the expense of reduced elongation at break. The co-continuity of phases observed with 30% EVA addition demonstrates that these methods can provide better performance and wider application range for PLA compounds.

Super toughed poly (lactic acid)/poly (ethylene vinyl acetate) blends compatibilized by ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer

Mengmeng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, super toughened PLA-based blends were successfully prepared by melt blending PLA with EVA and compatibilizing with E-MA-GMA. The addition of E-MA-GMA promoted phase adhesion and increased interface thickness, resulting in a super-toughened blend with incomplete fracture behavior during impact tests. The maximum impact strength of 77.6 kJ/m(2) was achieved with 12 wt% E-MA-GMA in the ternary blend, showing a 27.7 times improvement over neat PLA. Rheological and micromorphology analysis demonstrated enhanced viscosity and reduced crystallinity in the ternary blends.
