A new high parallel-field spectrometer at TRIUMF's β-NMR facility

Edward Thoeng et al.

Summary: A new high field spectrometer has been developed to expand the capabilities of the beta-NMR facility at TRIUMF. This extension allows for depth-resolved studies of local electromagnetic fields using spin polarized probes, with a much higher applied magnetic field than previously possible. The primary focus is on studying superconducting radio frequency (SRF) materials near the critical fields of Nb metal, commonly used for SRF cavities. The design and implementation of the ultra-high vacuum system, ion optics, and beam diagnostics are discussed, along with the commissioning of the beamline and spectrometer using radioactive ions. Future possibilities and applications in other areas are also mentioned.

Depth-Resolved Measurements of the Meissner Screening Profile in Surface-Treated Nb

Ryan M. L. McFadden et al.

Summary: We present depth-resolved measurements of the Meissner screening profile in surface-treated Nb samples using low-energy muon spin rotation. We find no evidence for any anomalous modifications to the Meissner profiles, with all data well described by a London model. Differences in screening properties between surface treatments can be explained by changes to the carrier mean free paths resulting from dopant profiles near the material's surface.

A β-NMR study of the depth, temperature, and molecular-weight dependence of secondary dynamics in polystyrene: Entropy-enthalpy compensation and dynamic gradients near the free surface

Iain McKenzie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the depth, temperature, and molecular-weight dependence of the gamma-relaxation in polystyrene glasses. The temperature dependence of the Li-8 spin-lattice relaxation time (T1avg) was measured near the free surface and in the bulk. The results showed differences in relaxation behavior between the surface and bulk, and a depth-dependent model was proposed to explain these observations.

Status and progress of ion-implanted βNMR at TRIUMF

W. Andrew MacFarlane

Summary: Beta-detected NMR utilizes the asymmetric property of radioactive beta decay to provide a nuclear detection scheme, offering greater sensitivity per nuclear spin compared to conventional NMR but requiring a suitable radioisotope. Implemented at TRIUMF, it enables the study of various samples such as crystalline solids, soft matter, and ionic liquids. The progress of the TRIUMF beta NMR program from 2015 to 2021 is also reviewed.

RF surface resistance tuning of superconducting niobium via thermal diffusion of native oxide

E. M. Lechner et al.

Summary: Recent studies on vacuum heat-treated Nb superconducting radio frequency cavities have shown that enhancement in RF surface conductivity is primarily associated with interstitial O alloying, with theory and quantification of previously unknown parameters playing crucial roles in modeling this process. RF measurements of the vacuum heat-treated Nb superconducting radio frequency cavity confirm the minimized surface resistance, previously thought to only occur through diffusive alloying with N at 800 degrees C.

Signatures of Surface Magnetic Disorder in Niobium Films

Alena S. Samsonova et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the evolution of normal and superconducting properties with thickness of thin Nb films with a low level of non-magnetic disorder. Analysis suggests the presence of magnetic moments in the native oxide on the surface of Nb films, with a density of 10(13) cm(-2) as determined by the Abrikosov-Gorkov theory, consistent with previous data.

CODATA recommended values of the fundamental physical constants: 2018

Eite Tiesinga et al.

Summary: The self-consistent values of physics and chemistry constants recommended by CODATA for 2018 are reported, with discussions on major improvements and inconsistencies. Many constants have reduced uncertainties or exact values due to the transition to the revised SI. However, inconsistencies remain for the gravitational constant and the muon magnetic-moment anomaly.

Evolution of the metallic state in LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices measured by 8Li β-detected NMR

Victoria L. Karner et al.

Summary: Using ion-implanted Li-8 beta-detected NMR, the study investigated the evolution of the correlated metallic state of LaNiO3 in LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices as a function of bilayer thickness, revealing different relaxation components with varying temperature dependence. The metallic character of the slow relaxing component is weakly affected by the LaNiO3 thickness, while the fast component is more sensitive, showing opposite temperature dependence in the thinnest, most magnetic samples. This bipartite relaxation is discussed in terms of electronic phase separation.
