Mechanical properties of graphene nanoplatelets containing random structural defects

Panagiotis Gavallas et al.

Summary: In this work, the mechanical behavior of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) with different planar defects is investigated. The stiffness of GNPs is severely reduced by vacancy defects, leading to significant variability. Inplane behavior is more susceptible to the effect of defects compared to out of plane behavior.

Electronic transport in copper-graphene composites

Kashi N. Subedi et al.

Summary: We used density-functional theory (DFT) to investigate the electronic transport properties of copper-graphene (Cu-G) composites. By varying the interfacial distance of copper/graphene/copper (Cu/G/Cu) interface models, we studied the conduction in composites. Our calculations using the Kubo-Greenwood formula showed that the conductivity of the models increased as the Cu-G distance decreased and saturated below a certain threshold. Bader charge analysis based on DFT revealed increasing charge transfer between Cu atoms and graphene as the Cu-G distance decreased. The electronic density of states showed increased contributions from both copper and carbon atoms near the Fermi level with decreasing Cu-G interfacial distance. Space-projected conductivity calculations demonstrated that graphene acted as a bridge for electronic conduction at small Cu-G distances, thus enhancing conductivity.

Macro copper-graphene composites with enhanced electrical conductivity

Keerti S. Kappagantula et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel approach of enhancing the electrical conductivity of 3D metal composites by adding graphene in minute quantities (15 ppm). The research demonstrated that composites with low defect density graphene showed improved electrical conductivity with increasing graphene content, while those with high defect density graphene exhibited lower electrical conductivity. Further advancements in this area are crucial for the development of high-performance composite conductors for more efficient energy transport.

Improving the electrical conductivity of copper/graphene composites by reducing the interfacial impurities using spark plasma sintering diffusion bonding

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that Cu/Gr composites prepared using spark plasma sintering diffusion bonding (SPS) exhibit higher electrical conductivity compared to those prepared using hot press diffusion bonding (HP). This is attributed to the reduced interfacial impurities in the Cu/Gr composites achieved by SPS process.
