Topological phases in polar oxide nanostructures

Javier Junquera et al.

Summary: The past decade has witnessed significant progress in understanding emergent topological polar textures in oxide nanostructures, including vortices, skyrmions, merons, hopfions, dipolar waves, and labyrinthine domains. The discovery of low-dimensional ferroelectric oxide nanostructures has altered the perceived energy cost associated with the formation of these structures, allowing for manipulation of order parameters. This review provides a historical context, scientific description, and discussion of the potential applications and future challenges in this field.

Oxygen-Driven Metal-Insulator Transition in SrNbO3 Thin Films Probed by Infrared Spectroscopy

Paola Di Pietro et al.

Summary: The occurrence of oxygen-driven metal-insulator-transition (MIT) in SrNbO3 thin films grown on DyScO3 has been studied. The results show that increasing oxygen content leads to vertical shrinkage of the SNO unit cell while maintaining epitaxial matching with the substrate. Highly oxygenated films exhibit distinct insulating behavior compared to oxygen deficient films. Tailoring the optical absorption and conductivity across the MIT in strontium niobate epitaxial films will have potential applications.

Electronic structure of the highly conductive perovskite oxide SrMoO3

E. Cappelli et al.

Summary: In this study, angle-resolved photoemission was used to investigate the Fermi surface and quasiparticle dispersion of SrMoO3 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. The electronic self-energy revealed weak to moderate correlations in SrMoO3, which is consistent with the well-defined electronic states observed over the occupied bandwidth. Spectral function calculations combining dynamical mean-field theory and unfolding procedure of density functional calculations showed good agreement with the experimental results.

Thickness dependence of metal-insulator transition in SrMoO3 thin films

Min Zhu et al.

Summary: The thickness-dependent transport properties of SrMoO3 thin films on LaAlO3 substrates were investigated, revealing metal-insulator transitions (MITs) below 10 nm thickness. The low-temperature resistivity of these films is explained by quantum corrections of conductivity. An insulating behavior is observed at 3.5 nm thickness, described by the variable range hopping model with 2D fitting. Magneto-transport measurement of an SrMoO3 thin film with small positive magnetoresistance confirms the role of renormalized electron-electron interaction in driving the MIT.

Surface stability of SrNbO3+δ grown by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy

Suresh Thapa et al.

Summary: 4d transition metal oxides, such as SrNbO3, show promise for various applications including high mobility electronics. However, the synthesis of SrNbO3 is challenging due to the metastable nature of the Nb4+ cation and limitations in delivering refractory Nb. In this study, SrNbO3 thin films were successfully grown using hybrid molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) with a Sr source and a tris(diethylamido)(tert-butylimido) niobium precursor. Insulating SrHfO3 capping layers were deposited on top of the SrNbO3 films to preserve the metastable surface. The results demonstrate that the SrHfO3 capping plays a crucial role in preserving the crystalline quality and metastable charge state of Nb4+ under atmospheric conditions.

Understanding the Role of Defective Phases on the Conductivity Behavior of Strained Epitaxial LaNiO3 Thin Films

Jackson C. Wong et al.

Summary: This study explores the complex relationship between structure, processing, and conduction properties in LaNiO3 films using various characterization tools. The XRD patterns of LaNiO3 films are found to be unreliable for predicting their conductivity or insulating behavior. The surface XPS of defective and nondefective LaNiO3-x films can appear similar despite differences in their internal defective structure. Additionally, LaNiO3-x films with up to 50% defective phase exhibit metallic-like transport behavior down to 40 K.

Correlated oxide Dirac semimetal in the extreme quantum limit

Jong Mok Ok et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an emerging topological band structure in correlated oxide SrNbO3 thin films induced by strain-induced symmetry modification, showing ultrahigh mobility, exceptionally small effective mass, and nonzero Berry phase of Dirac electrons. The strained SrNbO3 films exhibit extreme quantum limit and a sign of fractional occupation of Landau levels, indicating a giant mass enhancement. This symmetry-modified SrNbO3 represents a rare example of correlated oxide Dirac semimetals, where strong correlation of Dirac electrons leads to the realization of a novel correlated topological quantum material.
