Near-isotropic polariton heat transport along a polar anisotropic nanofilm

Jose Ordonez-Miranda et al.

Summary: This study investigates the propagation and heat transport of surface phonon-polaritons in polar uniaxial anisotropic nanofilms. It is found that the propagation of polaritons can be described by even and odd modes, which can be tuned by changing the angle between the film optical axis and the propagation direction. The thermal conductivity of polaritons is higher in thinner or hotter nanofilms, and the even and odd modes contribute significantly to the total thermal conductivity.

Observation of heat transport mediated by the propagation distance of surface phonon-polaritons over hundreds of micrometers

Y. Wu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally demonstrates the long-distance heat transport capability of surface phonon-polaritons (SPhPs). The results suggest that heat conduction by SPhPs is quasi-ballistic over at least hundreds of micrometers, paving the way for coherent heat manipulations over macroscopic distances and impacting applications in thermal management and polaritonics.

Germanium-on-Carborundum Surface Phonon-Polariton Infrared Metamaterial

Bo Qiang et al.

Summary: A phononic-dielectric metamaterial consisting of a 2D periodic array of germanium discs on silicon carbide was demonstrated, showing sharp resonances at a wavelength ten times larger than the lattice parameter. A blueshift in the resonant frequency was observed with an increase in disk size, attributed to the anomalous dispersion of surface polaritons. The researchers argue that this surface phonon-polariton metamaterial is a promising platform for applications requiring enhanced homogeneity of optical response, such as imaging, holography, and cloaking.

High-Speed Efficient On-Chip Electro-Optic Modulator Based on Midinfrared Hyperbolic Metamaterials

Dongdong Li et al.

Summary: A high-speed and efficient on-chip electro-optic modulator based on midinfrared hyperbolic metamaterials is proposed, with a modulation region length of 60 nm and high integration. It features a maximum modulation depth of 30 dB and a 3-dB modulation speed of up to 50 GHz.
