Electrochemical dealloying of porous NiTi alloy: Porosity evolution, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility behavior

S. A. Hosseini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role and mechanism of electrochemical dealloying (ED) to decrease the nickel ion release and improve the biocompatibility of porous NiTi alloy. The results showed that ED treatment can effectively reduce the concentration of released nickel ions and improve cell adhesion and proliferation on the alloy surface by forming titanium oxide clusters and fine porous structures.

Atomic simulation study on the effect of Y atom and grain boundary on tensile deformation in polycrystalline magnesium alloy

Wanwan Mei et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of polycrystalline magnesium alloy was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The factors influencing tensile properties and deformation mechanism were discussed. It was observed that the presence of Y atoms inhibited the activation of basal < a > slip and promoted the activation of pyramidal < c + a > slip. Cracks formed along grain boundaries with significant orientation differences and propagated along these boundaries. Stress concentration mainly occurred at grain boundaries, with concentration decreasing as grain size decreased. Formation of deformation twins was suppressed in small grains, whereas twins tended to nucleate at grain boundaries and grew by absorbing dislocations. Additionally, new twins were preferentially formed near existing twins.

Inverse change in positron lifetimes of vacancies in tungsten by binding of interstitial impurity atoms to a vacancy: A first-principles study

Atsushi Yabuuchi

Summary: First-principles calculations were used to study defect complexes formed from a monovacancy and multiple interstitial impurity atoms in tungsten. The study calculated the most stable atomic configurations, electron density distributions, binding energies, and positron lifetimes of each defect complex. The calculations found that slight deviations in the initial positions of hydrogen atoms influenced the positron lifetimes of vacancy-hydrogen complexes. Additionally, it was observed that the positron lifetimes of vacancy-nitrogen and vacancy-oxygen complexes increased with the number of binding impurity atoms, possibly due to the expansion of the tungsten lattice.

Summary: As the grain size decreases, fundamental changes in phase transition behavior of nanocrystalline NiTi shape memory alloys occur, characterized by a transition from atomic interface friction in phase transition to plastic deformation caused by grain boundary sliding.

Microstructure, shape memory properties, and in vitro biocompatibility of porous NiTi scaffolds fabricated via selective laser melting

H. Z. Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, three porous NiTi scaffolds with different pore sizes but the same porosity were fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM). The scaffolds were systematically studied for their microstructure, mechanical properties, shape memory properties, and in vitro biocompatibility. The results showed that the elastic modulus of the scaffolds was similar to human bones, and the compressive strength and recovery rate were better than most reported porous NiTi alloys.
