Extraction of lipids from microalgae using classical and innovative approaches

Jianjun Zhou et al.

Summary: Microalgae is a photosynthetic autotrophic organism that contains various bioactive compounds, including lipids, proteins, and polysaccharides, which have been widely used in industries such as food, medicine, and fuel. Microalgae are considered a valuable source of marine lipids due to their high content of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), which can be used as a supplement or alternative to fish-based oil. This paper reviews different extraction methods for microalgae lipids, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Furthermore, it discusses the health benefits of microalgae lipids and their applications in various fields, aiming to develop environmentally friendly and efficient methods for lipid extraction from microalgae and explore their potential applications.

Deep eutectic solvents for the extraction of fatty acids from microalgae biomass: Recovery of omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid

P. Moreno Martinez et al.

Summary: Microalgae are a valuable natural source of organic compounds, and the use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) as an alternative to organic solvents for extraction has shown promising results. This study evaluated the efficiency of various DES phases for extracting fatty acids from microalgae, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The results demonstrated that several DES phases outperformed traditional organic solvent methods in terms of EPA extraction. DES also had improved extraction capacity when combined with microalgae biomass pretreatment.

Enhanced biomass production and proximate composition of marine microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica by optimization of medium composition and culture conditions using response surface methodology

Jisha Kumaran et al.

Summary: This study optimized the medium composition and culture conditions for Nannochloropsis oceanica, leading to increased biomass production and improved proximate composition of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. The results showed that nitrate, temperature, and pH had positive effects on biomass production, with interactions between these factors influencing the concentrations of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. The modified Walne's medium with increased nitrate concentration at optimum temperature and pH resulted in a 31% increase in biomass yield compared to non-optimized conditions.
