From plant scent defense to biopesticide discovery: Evaluation of toxicity and acetylcholinesterase docking properties for Lamiaceae monoterpenes

Summary: Monoterpenes are diverse chemical scents produced by plants as a defense against herbivores. Monoterpenes from Lamiaceae species have shown acaricidal activity against mites and ticks, but their mechanism of action is poorly understood. In this study, we reviewed the bioactivity of these compounds and assessed their potential toxicity to mites and ticks by measuring their docking ability to Drosophila melanogaster acetylcholinesterase (AChE). We identified several monoterpenoids that strongly bind to D. melanogaster AChE and suggest further exploration of linalool as a potential target for optimization studies.

Insecticidal activity of the essential oil of Schinus areira against Rhipibruchus picturatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchinae), and its inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase

Summary: During the storage of Prosopis alba pods, significant losses were observed due to the seed beetle Rhipibruchus picturatus. This study investigated the insecticidal activity of Schinus areira and Citrus spp. essential oils (EOs) against R. picturatus. The results showed that the EOs obtained from S. areira leaves exhibited the best insecticidal activity, inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase enzyme. These findings suggest the potential use of Schinus areira EOs in developing new storage pest control strategies.
