Pyronaridine: An update of its pharmacological activities and mechanisms of action

Christian Bailly

Summary: PYR is a potent erythrocytic schizonticide with antimalarial activity against drug-resistant Plasmodium, also showing antitumor effects and efficacy against other parasitic diseases. Its mechanisms of action involve inhibition of hemozoin formation, interference with DNA metabolism, potential immune modulation, and implication in mitochondrial oxidative pathways. The diverse health benefits of pyronaridine are highlighted through its various biological actions.

Hepatic safety of repeated treatment with pyronaridine-artesunate versus artemether-lumefantrine in patients with uncomplicated malaria: a secondary analysis of the WANECAM 1 data from Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

Yves Daniel Compaore et al.

Summary: The study found that Pyronaridine-artesunate and artemether-lumefantrine showed similar hepatic safety when used repeatedly in patients with uncomplicated malaria. Pyronaridine-artesunate is considered a suitable alternative to the current first-line anti-malarial drugs in endemic areas.
