Summary: This study investigated the effects of high cereal grains diet and high fiber diet on metabolic parameters and production aspects in horses. The results showed that horses fed with high cereal grains had increased intestinal permeability, higher muscle pH, increased fat content, among other negative effects, compared to horses fed with high fiber diet.

Feeding time in horses provided roughage in different combinations of haynets and on the stable floor

Summary: Restrictions in forage availability can lead to reduced welfare in horses due to shorter eating or foraging times. This study examined the effect of adding straw to a forage-based diet, with and without the use of haynets, on eating and feeding time in horses. The results showed that feeding forage in haynets prolonged forage eating time and slowed down forage eating rate compared to feeding forage on the floor. Additionally, providing straw on the floor increased total feeding time and feed searching time.

Studying the Shape Variations of the Back, the Neck, and the Mandibular Angle of Horses Depending on Specific Feeding Postures Using Geometric Morphometrics

Summary: Feeding devices such as hay nets are commonly used to increase horses' feeding time on hay, however, they may lead to unnatural feeding positions. Geometric morphometrics was applied to study the shape variations of back and neck postures, as well as mandibular angle, during hay feeding in different positions. Results showed significant differences in back and neck postures and mandibular angle between high and low hay net positions, emphasizing the importance of further investigation into the effects of feeding positions on the horse's shape variations.

A comparative study of breed differences in the anatomical configuration of the equine vertebral column

Summary: The study describes anatomical variations in the thoracolumbar vertebral column of Warmblood horses, Shetland ponies, and Konik horses, including differences in the number of vertebrae and pairs of ribs, as well as ankylosed intertransverse joints. Shetland ponies showed a higher tendency of vertebral variations and rib pair variations, such as thoracoization and lumbarization. Additional follow-up studies are needed to assess the clinical relevance of these variations.
