Effect of CaO on structure and properties of AZ61 magnesium alloy

Umer Masood Chaudry et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of CaO additions on the microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties of AZ61 magnesium alloy. The addition of CaO leads to the formation of Ca-rich intermetallic compounds and influences the evolution of the alloy's structure. Additionally, the alloys containing CaO exhibit twined structures, with an increased fraction of tension twins as the amount of CaO increases.

Effect of deformation temperature on the slip activity in pure Mg and AZX211

Umer Masood Chaudry et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and slip activity in pure Mg and AZX211 alloy during deformation at room and cryogenic temperatures were systematically investigated. The results showed that AZX211 exhibited exceptional strength/ductility synergy and superior ductility compared to pure Mg at different temperatures, attributed to grain refinement, texture softening, and Ca-containing second phase particles. Analysis of the slip modes revealed higher activities of basal and prismatic slip in AZX211, while pyramidal dislocation slip was promoted in pure Mg at low deformation temperature.

A strong, ductile and in-plane tensile isotropic Mg-0.5Zn-0.5Y-0.15Si alloy

Chuan Li et al.

Summary: Strength ductility tradeoff and in-plane isotropy under tensile loading are challenges in magnesium alloys. By fabricating a specific alloy and analyzing factors such as grain size, texture, and precipitates, a magnesium alloy with high strength, high elongation, strain hardenability, and excellent in-plane tensile isotropy can be achieved.

Achieving higher dynamic mechanical response by adjusting texture through twinning in a ZK61 Mg alloy

Abdul Malik et al.

Summary: In this study, the reorientation of texture and improvement of mechanical properties in ZK61-T6 and ZK61-PC magnesium alloys were achieved through cross pre-compression. The results showed that the compressive yield strength, ultimate compressive strength, and elongation to fracture were significantly increased. The microstructure evolution revealed the propensity and width of adiabatic shear band and the role of twinning, de-twinning, and dislocation in absorbing high-stress energy. The twinning-induced rotational dynamic recrystallization mechanism contributed to the development of fine grains. Based on the findings, pre-compression is recommended as a practical approach to enhance the efficiency of ZK61 magnesium alloy.

Grain boundary co-segregation in magnesium alloys with multiple substitutional elements

Risheng Pei et al.

Summary: Alloying additions in magnesium can modify common basal textures during recrystallization based on their solid solubility and precipitation behavior. The type and level of solute segregation in grain boundaries play a key role in controlling the growth behavior. Further research can advance current alloy design strategies by tweaking the solute concentration in the solid solution.

Effect of 1Al addition on deformation behavior of Mg

Ji Hyun Hwang et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of a magnesium alloy containing 1% aluminum has been investigated in this study. The alloy shows much higher strength and larger elongation compared to pure magnesium with similar texture and grain size. Non-basal slips are easily activated in the Mg-1Al alloy at an early stage of deformation, leading to strain localization along the initially formed slip lines with increasing tensile strain.

The development of a strong and ductile Mg-Zn-Zr thin sheet through nano precipitates and pre-induced dislocation

Abdul Malik et al.

Summary: A strong and ductile Mg-Zn-Zr alloy thin sheet was developed in this study, with fiber basal texture and a large amount of pre-induced dislocations and nano-size precipitates observed in the grain interior. Deformation was accommodated through twinning and dislocations, leading to high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and fracture elongation.
