Laser powder bed fusion of the Ni superalloy Inconel 939 using pulsed wave emission

I. Rodriguez-Barber et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to determine the processability window of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) for Inconel 939 (IN939) alloy using pulsed wave (PW) laser emission. A design of experiments strategy was employed to find the optimal laser power, scan speed, and hatch distance parameters. Different characterization techniques were used to analyze the microstructure of the samples, and mechanical tests were conducted to compare the performance of the additively manufactured specimens with cast samples. The study shows that IN939 can be processed by PW LPBF with high densities and a flexible microstructural design within the optimum processability window.

The effect of heat treatment on the room and high temperature mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated by selective laser melting

N. Tabatabaei et al.

Summary: This study provides a new interpretation of the effect of different heat treatments on the microstructural evolution and deformation behavior of selectively laser-melted AlSi10Mg alloy. It is found that the flow responses of the treated microstructures have not improved as expected, mainly due to the dissolution of the cellular structure and its impact on trapped gas defects. In addition, the melt pool boundaries are prone to crack nucleation and growth, which is attributed to the high connectivity of Si-network and strain localization.

Effect of temperature on tensile behavior, fracture morphology and deformation mechanisms of Nickel-based single crystal CMSX-4

Tianjian Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of temperature on the tensile behavior and deformation mechanisms in a single crystal super alloy CMSX-4 was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The tensile yield strength was found to reach a peak at 800 degrees C and then decrease with increasing temperature. At room temperature, anti-phase boundary shearing dominated the plastic deformation, whereas at higher temperatures, stacking fault shearing and dislocation climb became the main mechanisms. Dislocation loops with anti-phase boundary shearing of the precipitates were observed at 950 degrees C. Above 950 degrees C, the plastic deformation mechanism involved the rafted structure of the precipitates.

Summary: The application of additive manufacturing (AM) for Ni-based superalloys is important in aerospace and power-generation industries. However, challenges arise due to heterogeneity in printing complex alloys. Understanding the relationship between AM process and microstructure heterogeneity is crucial for developing mitigation strategies. Fabricating more homogeneous Ni-based superalloy parts is expected to enhance mechanical properties and expand applications.

Microstructure-performance relationships in Ni-based superalloy with coprecipitation of γ' and γ'' phases

Shengyu Zhou et al.

Summary: The correlation between microstructure-properties in a Ni-based superalloy and the coprecipitation of gamma'/gamma'' phases has been extensively studied. Experimental results show that a high amount of compact gamma'/gamma'' phases contributes to the tensile strength of the alloy, which decreases with the coarsening of the gamma'/gamma'' structures. The gamma'/gamma'' phases can hinder the motion of dislocations, and their size influences the deformation mechanisms.

On the short-time thermal phase-stability of as-cast AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high entropy alloy

J. Charkhchian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the short-time thermal phase-stability of the as-cast eutectic AlCoCrFeNi2.1 high entropy alloy. Microstructural characterization, thermodynamic calculations, and assessment of mechanical properties were conducted to explore the effect of different temperatures and soaking times on the stability of primary dendritic regions and the formation of ordered phases. The results show that the primary dendritic regions grow and destabilize with an increase in annealing temperature and soaking time, leading to the formation of needle shape B-2 ordered phases. Despite the unstable nature of the primary constituent phases, the material hardness increases significantly at a moderate soaking time.

Deformation mechanism and nano-scale interplay of dual precipitation during compressive deformation of a duplex lightweight steel at high strain rate

Yahya H. Mozumder et al.

Summary: The compressive deformation response of Fe-Mn-Al-Ni-C lightweight steel strengthened with dual precipitation was studied at a temperature regime of 1223-1423 K and a strain rate of 10 s(-1). The steel exhibited yield-point like elongation phenomenon and unique flow softening curve characteristics of 'localized hardening' and 'localized softening'. The microstructural evolution indicated FCC phase recrystallization via DDRX mechanism and B2 precipitates influenced DDRX nucleation and grain growth during high strain rate deformation. The BCC phase showed DDRX-like mechanism near the FCC/BCC interphase boundaries and CDRX mechanism facilitated by intragranular B2 precipitates. The strengthening effect of B2 precipitates prevented strain localization, but low temperature deformation may lead to micro-voids and micro-cracks at FCC/BCC interphase boundaries.
