Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have gained attention due to their low cost, abundant zinc resources, and high safety. Despite their potential, the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries is hindered by the unsatisfactory performance of cathode materials and complex manufacturing processes. This research explores a Ce doped-MnO2 binder-free cathode electrode for flexible zinc-ion batteries, demonstrating high reversible specific capacity, significant energy density, and excellent stability. The energy storage mechanism of the flexible zinc-ion batteries with Mn-based oxides cathode is also investigated, providing insights into the reversible insertion/extraction of ions during charge/discharge processes. Overall, this research opens up new opportunities for the use of flexible zinc-ion batteries in portable and wearable electronics.

Multiple structural defects in poor crystalline nickel-doped tungsten disulfide nanorods remarkably enhance supercapacitive performance

Summary: Developing efficient construction to tailor the multiple structure defects of nanomaterials is a captivating approach for designing unique electroactive materials for supercapacitors. This study successfully synthesized Ni-doped tungsten disulfide nanorod arrays on nickel foam using a hydrothermal technique, resulting in a configuration with abundant interconnected nanorods. The Ni-doped WS2/NF NRs electrode exhibited a high specific capacity and outstanding cycling stability, which can be attributed to enhanced conductivity and richer active sites in the multiple structural electroactive materials.

Ultrafast, long-life, high-loading, and wide-temperature zinc ion supercapacitors

The incorporation of activated carbon (AC), aqueous binder, and concentrated electrolyte enabled the ZICs to achieve unprecedented performance, including large capacitance, high rate capability, long cycle life, high loadings, and wide temperature operation. The AC electrode revealed a proton/Zn2+ ion co-interaction mechanism. This work opens up possibilities for practical supercapacitors beyond normal conditions.

Uncovering sulfur doping effect in MnO2 nanosheets as an efficient cathode for aqueous zinc ion battery

Summary: This study proposes sulfur doped MnO2 nanosheets as a high-performance cathode material for zinc-ion batteries, exhibiting large discharge capacity, high rate performance, and long cycle life. The incorporation of sulfur improves the intrinsic electronic conductivity of MnO2 and accelerates reaction kinetics by weakening the electrostatic interactions with Zn(2+) cations. The sulfur doping also induces an amorphous surface with abundant oxygen defects, contributing to additional Zn storage sites with pseudocapacitive behavior.

Two-Dimensional Core-Shell Structure of Cobalt-Doped@MnO2 Nanosheets Grown on Nickel Foam as a Binder-Free Battery-Type Electrode for Supercapacitor Application

Summary: In this study, an interfacial engineering strategy was proposed to construct an efficient hydrothermal approach for supercapacitors by in situ growing cobalt-doped@MnO2 nanocomposite on highly conductive nickel foam. The cobalt dopant with high specific surface area provided a larger contacting area for MnO2, and the hierarchical phase-based pore architecture of the cobalt-doped surface condensed the electron transportation pathways. The nickel foam nanosheets provided charge-transport channels, leading to improved electrochemical activities.
