Sulphur-dopant induced breaking of the scaling relation on low-valence Ni sites in nickel ferrite nanocones for water oxidation with industrial-level current density

Hai -Jun Liu et al.

Summary: The preparation of sulfur-doped NiFe2O4 nanocone arrays on iron foams (S-NiFe2O4/IF) via a scalable hydrothermal method is described. The 3D nanocone arrays provide a large electrochemical surface area and allow efficient electrolyte access and oxygen escape. Low-valence Ni atoms in tetrahedron sites are found to be more active than high-valence Fe atoms in this S-doped bimetallic catalyst, and the introduction of sulfur enhances water adsorption and dissociation as well as the adsorption of OER intermediates on Ni sites. The optimized S-NiFe2O4/IF catalyst achieves an industrial-level current density of 500 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 310 mV and maintains stability for 100 hours in alkaline medium. Furthermore, integrating S-NiFe2O4/IF into an anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer allows for a current density of 1.0 A cm-2 at 1.79 V.

Fe and Co dual-doped Ni3S4 nanosheet with enriched high-valence Ni sites for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Xiaoqing Mao et al.

Summary: Transition metal compound catalysts with high efficient and stable performance have attracted extensive attention of researchers. In this study, dual cation doped Ni3S4 nanosheets loaded on nickel foam were prepared by two step hydrothermal method. Co and Fe dual doping can induce the internal electronic interaction of the catalyst, thus exposing more active sites. The electrochemical test results show that Co and Fe doped Ni3S4 have better electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution than single cation doped and pure Ni3S4.

Summary: This study reports a synergistic hybrid catalyst composed of nanoscale heterostructures of Co9S8 and Fe3O4, which exhibits only a low potential of 350 mV and record stability of 120 h at the 500 mA cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH. The reconstructions of Co9S8@Fe3O4 into CoOOH/CoOx@Fe3O4 and then to complete CoOOH@Fe3O4 are revealed through voltage-dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Operando Raman spectroscopy. The completely reconstructed CoOOH acts as the active species and Fe3O4 components prevent the aggregation of CoOOH.
