Effect of N and CO2 supply on source size per grain at anthesis and its relationship with grain growth in wheat

Remy Manderscheid et al.

Summary: The study finds that rising atmospheric CO2 concentration and nitrogen supply can increase wheat yield mainly by increasing grain number, but have variable effects on single grain weight. The size of the source and sink during grain filling play important roles in determining single grain growth. The results suggest that high grain number under elevated CO2 and nitrogen supply may lead to low final grain weight due to insufficient source size.

The decline of plant mineral nutrition under rising CO2: physiological and molecular aspects of a bad deal

Alain Gojon et al.

Summary: Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration negatively affects C3 plant physiology beyond photosynthesis and carbon metabolism, leading to reduced mineral nutrient concentrations in plant tissues. This poses significant threats to crop quality, nutrient cycles, and carbon sinks in terrestrial agro-ecosystems. The detrimental effect on plant mineral status, particularly nitrogen, is associated with the direct inhibition of key mechanisms of nitrogen uptake and assimilation. Promising strategies for identifying genotypes that can maintain robust nutrient status in a high-CO2 world are also discussed.

Effects of elevated CO2 on grain yield and quality in five wheat cultivars

Xizi Wang et al.

Summary: Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations have significant effects on plant physiology, grain yield, and quality. This study found that increased CO2 concentration improved photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency, but reduced stomatal conductance. Different wheat cultivars responded differently to CO2 concentration, showing variations in grain yield and mineral/protein content.

Minimizing VPD Fluctuations Maintains Higher Stomatal Conductance and Photosynthesis, Resulting in Improvement of Plant Growth in Lettuce

Takayasu Inoue et al.

Summary: Moderate VPD fluctuation maintains plant growth and photosynthesis efficiency, while drastic VPD fluctuation causes a decrease in stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rate. Fine regulation of VPD is crucial for better plant growth by maintaining photosynthetic performance.

Effects of elevated CO2 on the C:N stoichiometry of plants, soils, and microorganisms in terrestrial ecosystems

Cuiting Wang et al.

Summary: The stoichiometry of carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N) in soils, plants, and microorganisms showed consistent responses of increased carbon concentrations and C:N ratio, and decreased nitrogen concentrations under elevated CO2 conditions. These responses were more pronounced with rising CO2 concentrations and longer experimental durations.
