An extensive review on the consequences of chemical pesticides on human health and environment

Lata Rani et al.

Summary: Pesticides play a key role in agriculture, but can pose serious risks to human health and the environment, including social conflicts and negative impacts on neighboring communities. Future research is needed to explore and develop new agricultural concepts to reduce the use of chemical pesticides.

Responses of the Necrotrophic Fungus Alternaria brassisicola to the Indolic Phytoalexin Brassinin

Guillaume Quang N'Guyen et al.

Summary: This study indicates that the indolic phytoalexin primarily targets mitochondrial functions in fungal cells. Treatment of A. brassicicola with phytoalexin disrupted the mitochondrial membrane potential and led to a significant and rapid decrease in oxygen consumption rates. Secondary effects, such as Reactive oxygen species production, changes in lipid and endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis were induced. Consequently, the fungus has to adapt its metabolism to protect itself against the toxic effects of these molecules, especially via the activation of high osmolarity glycerol and cell wall integrity signaling pathways and by induction of the unfolded protein response.

Disarming the Host: Detoxification of Plant Defense Compounds During Fungal Necrotrophy

Nathaniel M. Westrick et al.

Summary: The article discusses how necrotrophic fungi overcome plant defense compounds to achieve successful pathogenesis, including strategies such as enzymatic detoxification and toxin sequestration and efflux. Efficient detoxification of host PDCs is critical for successful infection and often determines pathogen host range.

Plant pathogen infection risk tracks global crop yields under climate change

Thomas M. Chaloner et al.

Summary: The study modeled the impact of future temperature changes on infection risk for 80 fungal and oomycete crop pathogens on 12 major crops, predicting increased risk and crop yield at higher latitudes and major shifts in pathogen assemblages in high-latitude regions. The findings suggest that while high-latitude areas may see both increased yields and infection risks, tropical regions may experience little to no productivity gains and decreased infection risk. Major changes in pathogen assemblages are also expected in the United States, Europe, and China.
