Income Inequality and the Odds of Online Gambling Among a Large Sample of Adolescents in Canada

Roman Pabayo et al.

Summary: Consistent evidence shows that income inequality negatively impacts population health and may be associated with online gambling. This study aims to examine the role of income inequality in the likelihood of participating in online gambling. Using data from the COMPASS survey, the Gini coefficient was calculated to measure income inequality and its effects on self-reported online gambling participation among 74,501 students from 136 schools. Results revealed that higher Gini coefficient values were associated with increased odds of participating in online gambling, particularly among males. The relationship between income inequality and online gambling may be mediated by mental health, school connectedness, and psychosocial well-being.

Summary: Research shows that income inequality is associated with adolescent bullying behavior, with an increase in the Gini coefficient linked to higher odds of victimization and perpetration, particularly among girls. School connectedness and psychosocial well-being are identified as potential mediators in the relationship between income inequality and bullying behavior.

Neighborhood Income Inequality and Alcohol Use among Adolescents in Boston, Massachusetts

Roman Pabayo et al.

Summary: Research suggests that income inequality within neighborhoods may be associated with adolescent alcohol consumption, with social cohesion and depressive symptoms not mediating this relationship. Public health practitioners should prioritize prevention efforts for adolescents living in neighborhoods with large income gaps.
