Anodizing Al-Si Foundry Alloys: A Critical Review

Giulia Scampone et al.

Summary: Compared with pure aluminum and wrought aluminum alloys, anodizing Al foundry alloys is more challenging due to the high content of alloying elements, which hinders the uniform growth of the Al oxide layer and promotes the embedding of defects in the anodic film. The microstructure of the substrate and the anodizing parameters play a crucial role in determining the quality of the oxide layer. Variations in chemical composition, casting process, and pre- and post-anodizing treatments have significant effects on the anodizing response.

Mechanical and tribological properties of anodic Al coatings as a function of anodizing conditions

Enkeleda Dervishi et al.

Summary: Enhanced wear and corrosion resistance properties are essential for functional and decorative applications. This study evaluates the effects of process variables on anodized coating properties and identifies optimum conditions for achieving high wear coatings with retained ductility. The results show that the porosity and coating thickness of the anodic coatings depend on the anodizing time and electrolyte type. Thicker and harder coatings are generated in sulfuric acid compared to phosphoric acid. Both electrolytes improve the tribological properties of the coatings, and an optimum processing time is identified for best wear properties.

Mechanism of hot water sealing of anodic films formed on aluminum

Sachiko Ono et al.

Summary: The process of hot water sealing of anodic alumina films was investigated, revealing that as sealing time increases, the quantity and size of boehmite flakes within the films also increase, ultimately forming a three-layered structure.

Influence of Fe-rich intermetallics and their segregation on anodising properties of Al-Si-Mg rheocast alloys

Baiwei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of Fe-rich intermetallics on the hardness and corrosion resistance of the anodized layer of AlSiMg alloys. Mechanical grinding was found to successfully remove the Fe enriched layer, improving the corrosion protection of the anodized oxide. Additionally, the oxide layer with low Fe content exhibited higher hardness compared to the oxide layer with high Fe content on the unground surface.
