The influence of Al addition and aluminizing process on oxidation performance of arc melted CoCrFeNi alloy

Hakki Boran Ersun et al.

Summary: High entropy alloys are promising for high-temperature applications, with the addition of aluminum and aluminizing processes improving their oxidation performance. The formation of an Al2O3 layer during oxidation results in lower mass gain, while the formation of mixed oxides and Cr2O3 leads to higher mass gain. Both aluminum addition and aluminizing process were found to enhance the oxidation resistance of CoCrFeNi alloy in this study.

Formation, Characterization, and Wear Behavior of Aluminide Coating on Mirrax® ESR Steel by Low-Temperature Aluminizing Process

Tuba Yener et al.

Summary: The study found that low-temperature aluminizing process can enhance the wear resistance of Mirrax steel, with increasing resistance as the processing time and temperature rise. Uncoated and thinly coated samples typically experience wear in the form of plastic deformation and adhesion-related ruptures, while samples with thicker coatings exhibit a significant degree of tribological layer, especially in high-temperature tests.

Low-temperature aluminizing influence on degradation of nimonic 80A surface: Microstructure, wear and high temperature oxidation behaviors

Azmi Erdogan et al.

Summary: After aluminizing process, Nimonic 80A alloy showed improved high temperature oxidation and wear properties. The coating layer exhibited strong bonding with the matrix, smooth and dense surface, and increased thickness with higher process temperature and duration, providing better protection against high temperature oxidation. Wear losses decreased with the increase in coating temperature and time, indicating enhanced performance in both high temperature and room temperature tests.

Characteristics, high temperature wear and oxidation behavior of boride layer grown on nimonic 80A Ni-based superalloy

Ali Gunen et al.

Summary: The nickel-based superalloy Nimonic 80A was borided using silicon-free boriding powders at temperatures of 850°C and 950°C for 2-4 hours, resulting in a smooth boride layer mainly composed of Ni2B with minor amounts of CrB, Cr2B, and Cr5B3. The hardness and elastic modulus of the boride layer increased with chromium content, while fracture toughness decreased. Boriding treatments improved dry sliding wear resistance, with higher values achieved with increased time and temperature, although they had no significant effect on oxidation resistance.

Oxidation mechanism of Ni plus CrAlYNO nanocomposite coating enhanced by a NiCrAlY buffer layer

Yixuan Jia et al.

Summary: The comparative study showed that the duplex coating had the lowest oxidation rate at 1000 degrees C, attributed to the uphill diffusion of Al from the NiCrAlY layer to the TGO-cermet interface. This improved oxidation resistance is due to the reactions of 2AlN+30 -> Al2O3+2 N and N + Al -> AlN driving the process.

Oxidation behaviour of ultrafast slurry aluminized nickel

Thomas Kepa et al.

Summary: The isothermal oxidation behavior of ultrafast slurry aluminized pure nickel between 900 and 1100 degrees C in air for 100 h was studied. The oxidation curves exhibited a parabolic shape due to the formation of alpha-Al2O3 scale, with faster degradation of the coating at higher temperatures. The microstructure evolution of the coatings is similar to that of slowly grown CVD-derived and slurry aluminide coatings, despite the one order of magnitude higher oxidation kinetics compared to pack-cemented coatings.

Increase in Oxidation Resistance of MAR M-509 via LA-CVD Aluminizing

Wojciech J. Nowak et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that aluminizing MAR M-509 significantly reduces its oxidation kinetics and improves its oxidation resistance. The aluminide layer suppressed identified degradation mechanisms until breakaway oxidation occurred. Increasing the thickness of the aluminide layer could further enhance oxidation resistance.
