Alkoxy Radicals See the Light: New Paradigms of Photochemical Synthesis

Liang Chang et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress in alkoxy radical-mediated transformations under visible light irradiation. The mechanisms of alkoxy radical generation and their impact on synthetic utilizations are discussed. The catalytic generation of alkoxy radicals from abundant alcohols is still in the early stage, but holds great potential.

Chemoselective Electrochemical Oxidation of Secondary Alcohols Using a Recyclable Chloride-Based Mediator

Florian Sommer et al.

Summary: The method described involves the use of a chloride salt as a redox mediator and supporting electrolyte for the selective oxidation of secondary alcohols in the presence of primary alcohols. Active chlorine species generated at the anode selectively oxidize secondary alcohols to ketones, providing good to excellent yields. Furthermore, the chloride salt can be easily recovered for reuse, making the method highly sustainable.

Electrochemical Deconstructive Functionalization of Cycloalkanols via Alkoxy Radicals Enabled by Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Mishra Deepak Hareram et al.

Summary: A new electrochemical method for the generation of alkoxy radicals from alcohols using proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) approach has been reported. The method allows the functionalization of cycloalkanols and access to a broad range of synthetically useful distally functionalized ketones. The products can be orthogonally derivatized through chemoselective transformations. The electrochemical process has been successfully performed on a gram scale in continuous single-pass flow.

Electrochemical formal homocoupling of sec-alcohols

Kosuke Yamamoto et al.

Summary: A sacrificial anode-free electrochemical protocol has been developed for the synthesis of pinacol-type vic-1,2-diols from sec-alcohols. The method allows for the synthesis of vic-1,2-diols in moderate to good yields, with good to high levels of stereoselectivity observed for sec-benzyl alcohol derivatives.

Indirect Electrosynthesis with Halogen Ions as Mediators

Fei Lian et al.

Summary: Organic electrosynthesis using electric current as redox regents is a sustainable alternative to traditional methods. Indirect electrosynthesis with mediators lowers overpotentials for substrate activation, enhancing reaction efficiency and functional group compatibility. Electrochemical reactions utilizing halogen mediators have the potential to broaden their scope and contribute to future developments in electrosynthesis.

Direct and Indirect Electrooxidation of Glycerol to Value-Added Products

Michael Guschakowski et al.

Summary: This study investigated and compared different approaches for the direct and indirect electrooxidation of glycerol, a by-product of oleochemistry and biodiesel production, for the synthesis of value-added products and of intermediates for biofuel/electrofuel production. The different approaches were discussed regarding selectivity, conversion, and coulombic efficiency of the electrochemical glycerol oxidation.

Base-Assisted Nitrate Mediation as the Mechanism of Electrochemical Benzyl Alcohol Oxidation

John L. DiMeglio et al.

Summary: The oxidation of nitrate anion to nitrate radical in acetonitrile solvent is chemically irreversible due to solvent-based hydrogen-atom transfer, leading to the formation of stoichiometric HNO3 during hydrogen-atom transfer reactions. Introduction of benzyl alcohol competes with acetonitrile for electrochemically generated nitrate radical and results in the production of benzaldehyde product. Additionally, oxygen reduction complements nitrate oxidation during catalysis, with reduced oxygen species identified as being capable of rendering nitrate catalytic when collocal.

Summary: The 21st century faces one of the greatest challenges in developing novel power sources, with fuel cells offering clean, non-fossil electricity production but lacking electrocatalytic materials with good stability and reaction kinetics enhancement. Researchers are focusing on developing novel electrode materials to overcome the drawbacks of using platinum electrodes in direct alcohol fuel cells and commercialize this technology.

Tunable System for Electrochemical Reduction of Ketones and Phthalimides

Yaxin Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient method for electrochemical reduction of ketones and phthalimides at room temperature without the need for stoichiometric external reductants, involving electron, proton, and hydrogen atom transfers. By selectively reducing carbonyl groups of substrates to alcohols, pinacols, or methylene groups with carefully chosen solvents and acidic additives, products with indolizidine scaffolds can be obtained. The N-3/HN3 cycle as a hydrogen atom shuttle is critical for the reduction of carbonyl groups to methylene groups.

Electrophotochemical Ring-Opening Bromination of tert-Cycloalkanols

Kosuke Yamamoto et al.

Summary: An electrophotochemical ring-opening bromination method has been developed to transform cycloalkanols into omega-bromoketones without the need for chemical oxidants or transition-metal catalysts. The key intermediates in this transformation are alkoxy radical species generated through homolysis of the O-Br bond in hypobromite intermediates under visible light irradiation.

Electrochemical Synthesis of 2-Bromoethyl and 2-Iodoethyl Ketones from Cyclopropanols

Maryia Barysevich et al.

Summary: A simple electrochemical protocol has been developed for the preparation of 2-bromoethyl and 2-iodoethyl ketones from cyclopropanols and magnesium halides. The reaction shows exclusive regioselectivity and no epimerization of the alpha-stereocenter in the products. Diastereomerically pure 2-bromoethyl ketones synthesized in this way can undergo various copper and nickel-catalyzed reactions smoothly.
