Potential for mercury methylation by Asgard archaea in mangrove sediments

Cui-Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: Methylmercury (MeHg) is a potent neurotoxin that bioaccumulates along food chains. The diversity and distribution of putative microbial Hg-methylators in mangrove ecosystems were investigated using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses. Asgard archaea, including Lokiarchaeota, were identified as potential novel Hg-methylating microorganisms. These findings suggest the important role of Asgard archaea in hgcA evolution and MeHg production.

A consensus protocol for the recovery of mercury methylation genes from metagenomes

Eric Capo et al.

Summary: Researchers have proposed a standardized protocol for detecting, identifying, and quantifying hgc genes from metagenomes, and have created a database containing information on hgc genes. They have also developed a user-friendly bioinformatic pipeline for accurately characterizing hgc genes from environmental samples. The results show that both approaches have similar efficiency in most environments, except for high diversity environments where the coassembly approach is preferred.

Vitamin B12 is not shared by all marine prototrophic bacteria with their environment

Sabiha Sultana et al.

Summary: In this study, certain bacteria were found to share vitamin B-12 with a B-12 auxotrophic diatom, while others were unable to provide B-12 or inhibited the growth of the diatom. This suggests that although most microorganisms require B-12, the mechanisms for exporting this cofactor are still unknown.

Candidatus Alkanophaga archaea from Guaymas Basin hydrothermal vent sediment oxidize petroleum alkanes

Hanna Zehnle et al.

Summary: Oil-rich deep-sea sediments are used to culture syntrophic communities of archaea and bacteria that pair petroleum alkane oxidation to sulfide generation. Recently, enzymes that can activate multicarbon alkanes have been recovered from archaeal enrichment cultures. Anoxic cultures degrading mid-chain petroleum n-alkanes at 70 degrees C using oil-rich Guaymas Basin sediments were produced. These cultures revealed the presence of archaea of the genus Candidatus Alkanophaga that activate the alkanes and oxidize alkyl groups to CO2.

Study of microplastics pollution in sediments and organisms in mangrove forests: A review

Zeinab Maghsodian et al.

Summary: Microplastics are a emerging pollutant that can enter marine environments like mangrove forests and interfere with the health of the environment and organisms. The concentration of microplastics in sediments is high and fiber and bright color microplastic particles are more common. In addition, mangrove forests exposed to fishing, coastal tourism, urban, and industrial wastewater have higher concentrations of microplastics.

Mercury methylation by metabolically versatile and cosmopolitan marine bacteria

Heyu Lin et al.

Summary: This study identified potential novel marine Hg-methylating microorganisms with greater oxygen tolerance and broader habitat range than previously recognized, by conducting large-scale multi-omic analyses in a natural ecosystem and analyzing gene expression profiles along defined redox gradients. The findings highlighted the presence of putative microbial Hg methylators, such as Calditrichaeota, SAR324, and Marinimicrobia, with the latter showing the highest activity levels based on hgc transcription. Computational modeling predicted the functionality of HgcAB proteins from Marinimicrobia in Hg methylation, suggesting a key role in marine Hg methylation for this microbial group. Additionally, the study also associated several putative novel Hg methylators with terminal oxidases from aerobic respiratory chains.
