Replicated life-history patterns and subsurface origins of the bacterial sister phyla Nitrospirota and Nitrospinota

Timothy D'Angelo et al.

Summary: The phyla Nitrospirota and Nitrospinota have received significant research attention due to their unique nitrogen metabolisms. These phyla are common inhabitants of marine and terrestrial subsurface environments and have diverse physiologies. Basal clades primarily inhabit these subsurface environments and have smaller, more densely coded genomes compared to later-branching clades. Both phyla share many traits inferred to be present in their respective common ancestors. Later-branching groups have genome expansions that include gene clusters performing unique nitrogen metabolisms. Modern subsurface environments represent a genomic repository for ancestral metabolic traits.

Marine and terrestrial nitrifying bacteria are sources of diverse bacteriohopanepolyols

Felix J. Elling et al.

Summary: Hopanoid lipids are unique membrane components found exclusively in bacteria and are commonly used as biomarkers for specific bacterial groups or biogeochemical processes in the geologic record. Recent studies suggest that marine bacterioplankton, including nitrifying bacteria, may have the potential for hopanoid biosynthesis. We have found that hopanoid biosynthesis genes are widespread among nitrifying bacteria and their diverse lineages, and that different types of hopanoids are produced by nitrifying bacteria in different environments. The carbon isotopic compositions of hopanoids can be used to estimate the contribution of nitrifying bacteria to environmental samples.

A nitrite-oxidising bacterium constitutively consumes atmospheric hydrogen

Pok Man Leung et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Nitrospira bacteria can oxidize hydrogen below atmospheric levels using a high-affinity hydrogenase enzyme. The hydrogen oxidation promotes nitrite-dependent growth and survival under nitrite limitation conditions. Thermodynamic modeling shows that hydrogen oxidation produces higher power yield than nitrite oxidation at low substrate concentrations and significantly contributes to growth at elevated nitrite concentrations.

Genomic and kinetic analysis of novel Nitrospinae enriched by cell sorting

Anna J. Mueller et al.

Summary: Chemolithoautotrophic nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) play crucial roles in global nitrogen and carbon cycling, with members of the phylum Nitrospinae being the most abundant in oceans. In this study, novel marine Nitrospinae were obtained through live cell sorting, activity screening, and subcultivation. The isolated strains represent two new genera, with one strain closely related to environmentally abundant Nitrospinae.
