Newly identified HMO-2011-type phages reveal genomic diversity and biogeographic distributions of this marine viral group

Fang Qin et al.

Summary: Viruses in the ocean have significant impacts on biogeochemical cycles, host mortality, population structure, physiology, and evolution. The HMO-2011-type viral group is dominant and widespread, but its genetic diversity, potential hosts, and ecology are poorly understood. This study identified and characterized multiple HMO-2011-type phages and highlighted their importance as major ecological agents targeting specific bacterial groups.

Metabolic reprogramming of Pseudomonas aeruginosa by phage-based quorum sensing modulation

Hanne Hendrix et al.

Summary: This study reveals the role of the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) in bacterial virus infection. The virus LUZ19 targets the PQS system by expressing the quorum sensing targeting protein (Qst), which interacts with key enzymes in the PQS biosynthesis pathway. This interaction leads to a decrease in PQS levels and impairs the virus infection, but can be restored by external supplementation of a PQS precursor. Qst represents a potential tool for combating antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens.

A Novel and Ubiquitous Marine Methylophage Provides Insights into Viral-Host Coevolution and Possible Host-Range Expansion in Streamlined Marine Heterotrophic Bacteria

Holger H. Buchholz et al.

Summary: Isolation and cultivation of viruses are crucial for understanding virus-host interactions and bioinformatic tools. This study characterized the first myophage infecting the OM43 clade, expanding knowledge of this microbial group. The myophage Melnitz infecting OM43 is globally ubiquitous and shares features with viruses infecting alphaproteobacterial SAR11 clade.

INfrastructure for a PHAge REference Database: Identification of Large-Scale Biases in the Current Collection of Cultured Phage Genomes

Ryan Cook et al.

Summary: As of January 2021, 14,244 complete phage genomes have been sequenced. The majority of phages in the database infect a small number of bacterial genera, with a bias towards lytic phages. The study suggests isolating and sequencing more phages, especially temperate phages, from a wider variety of hosts to better understand phage diversity.
