Glycine betaine uptake and metabolism in marine microbial communities

Angela K. Boysen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the uptake kinetics and metabolic fate of GBT in two microbial communities in the North Pacific. The results showed that the uptake rate and metabolism of GBT varied with nitrate concentrations. These findings reveal the complex biochemical potential of GBT and the significance of microbial metabolite exchange.

Metabolic adaptation of diatoms to hypersalinity

Vera Nikitashina et al.

Summary: Microalgae respond to salinity stress with common adaptations in the metabolome, such as up-regulation of amino acids and production of saccharides and inositols. However, there are also species-specific dysregulations of metabolites. Several metabolites not previously connected to osmotic stress reactions were identified. This study expands our knowledge about osmoadaptation and highlights the need for further functional characterization of metabolites and pathways in algal stress physiology.

Chemotaxonomic patterns in intracellular metabolites of marine microbial plankton

Bryndan P. Durham et al.

Summary: The majority of biological diversity on Earth is found in microbial communities, and the metabolic products of these microorganisms reflect their biochemical and physiological diversity. By using metabolomics techniques, we can categorize the metabolites of marine microbes, providing chemotaxonomic information and shedding light on the metabolic networks that influence ocean biogeochemical cycles.

Resource partitioning of phytoplankton metabolites that support bacterial heterotrophy

Frank Xavier Ferrer-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The communities of bacteria around marine microphytoplankton are dominated by Rhodobacterales, Flavobacteriales, and families within the Gammaproteobacteria. Analysis showed that bacterial uptake molecules in the ocean surface contain a high percentage of nitrogen and organic sulfur compounds, indicating their importance in the link between microbial autotrophs and heterotrophs.

Phytoplankton exudates and lysates support distinct microbial consortia with specialized metabolic and ecophysiological traits

Brandon Kieft et al.

Summary: This study found that different heterotrophic populations selectively assimilate exudates from common marine phytoplankton, with unique metabolic adaptations. The carbon assimilation rates calculated from SIP data provide a deeper mechanistic understanding of consumer succession and carbon use during marine bloom events.

Particulate Metabolites and Transcripts Reflect Diel Oscillations of Microbial Activity in the Surface Ocean

Angela K. Boysen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the biochemical consequences of light oscillations on community metabolism in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre by measuring 79 metabolites in particulate organic matter. It found that 55 out of 79 individual metabolites exhibited significant 24-hour periodicity, with rapid changes in concentration, highlighting the important impact of oscillating metabolites on marine microbial ecosystems.

The Osmolyte Ties That Bind: Genomic Insights Into Synthesis and Breakdown of Organic Osmolytes in Marine Microbes

Erin L. McParland et al.

Summary: Marine organisms play a crucial role in the carbon cycle by producing and consuming organic matter. Osmolytes are small metabolites that regulate osmolarity and can be released as abundant dissolved substrates. The genetic potential of marine microbes suggests active recycling of osmolytes, which can serve as a significant source of nutrients for diverse microbial groups in the marine ecosystem.
