Worker Reproduction and Caste Polymorphism Impact Genome Evolution and Social Genes Across the Ants

Megan Barkdull et al.

Summary: Eusocial insects have reproductive division of labor and caste polymorphisms, which may modulate genome evolution. Comparative analyses of 22 ant genomes show that worker reproductive capacity is associated with reduced relaxed selection, but not with significant change to positive selection. Species with polymorphic workers have decreased positive selection. Candidate genes associated with worker sterility and soldier development in Pheidole ants experience intensified selection in worker polymorphic species.

Partner fidelity and environmental filtering preserve stage-specific turtle ant gut symbioses for over 40 million years

Yi Hu et al.

Summary: Social insects maintain beneficial gut symbiosis through behavioral conformity and transgenerational inheritance. A study on 13 eusocial, holometabolous insect species found consistency in worker and soldier microbiomes, phylosymbiosis in adult microbiomes, and cospeciation between Cephalotes ants and the most abundant adult-enriched symbiont. Winged queens have worker-like microbiomes prior to colony founding, indicating vertical inheritance as a means of partner fidelity. Larval gut microbiomes are characterized by environmental bacteria, suggesting over 40 million years of conserved environmental filtering and a second sustaining mechanism behind an ancient, developmentally partitioned symbiosis.

Beetle-Bacterial Symbioses: Endless Forms Most Functional

Hassan Salem et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent studies on the role of bacterial symbionts in promoting beetle fitness. The functional diversity of these symbionts expands the host's ecological niche, but also constrains its evolutionary potential. The article discusses the relationship between bacterial localization and beneficial effects, as well as the molecular and behavioral mechanisms of symbiont translocation and transmission by the beetle host.

Species divergence in gut-restricted bacteria of social bees

Yiyuan Li et al.

Summary: By studying the gut microbiomes of honey bees and bumble bees, it was found that the gut-associated bacteria, Gilliamella and Snodgrassella, have diversified into discrete populations over 80 million years, with limited gene flow. These bacteria have adapted to specific hosts and ecological niches through acquiring genes, leading to barriers to gene flow within different host species and within individual hosts.

A Review on Differential Abundance Analysis Methods for Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomic Data

Zhengyan Huang et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of statistical methods for differential abundance (DA) analysis in mass spectrometry-based metabolomic data. The high-throughput data produced by mass spectrometry often contain a large fraction of zero values, and various statistical methods have been developed to characterize and analyze this zero-inflated data. The article discusses and compares different DA analysis methods in terms of their assumptions and statistical modeling techniques.

Summary: Liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is widely used in global metabolomics studies, but there are still challenges in data processing, statistical analysis, and functional interpretation. To overcome these barriers, the MetaboAnalyst platform has been updated to provide step-by-step instructions.

Turtle ants harbor metabolically versatile microbiomes with conserved functions across development and phylogeny

Benoit Bechade et al.

Summary: Bacterial symbionts living in the guts of turtle ants, both adults and larvae, have the ability to upgrade their host limited diet through metabolic processes. These gut bacterial symbionts support animal nutrition by facilitating digestion and providing valuable metabolites. The larvae and adult workers of turtle ants both harbor bacterial symbionts with impressive metabolic capabilities, including the breakdown of plant and fungal fibers and energy generation through fermentation. These symbionts have the genomic capacity to recycle nitrogen, synthesize amino acids and B-vitamins. The presence of these gut symbionts helps turtle ant larvae aid colony digestion and contribute to the colony-wide nitrogen, B-vitamin, and energy budgets. The specialized adult gut microbiome suggests that the nutritional ecology of turtle ant colonies has been shaped by specialized gut bacteria over a long period of time.

Localization of Bacterial Communities within Gut Compartments across Cephalotes Turtle Ants

Peter J. Flynn et al.

Summary: This study examined bacterial communities within the turtle ant genus Cephalotes and found significant differences in microbial composition across different gut compartments, transcending caste and host phylogeny. Additionally, the microbiome composition in Cephalotes ants is influenced by caste type and the evolutionary history of the species, with related ants maintaining related microbiomes possibly due to cospeciation. The study also revealed that specific gut compartment signatures of microbial diversity and abundance have been conserved over evolutionary history, indicating a stable symbiosis for over 50 million years.

Assessing Biosynthetic Gene Cluster Diversity of Specialized Metabolites in the Conserved Gut Symbionts of Herbivorous Turtle Ants

Summary: This study reveals the high diversity of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) producing specialized metabolites in the gut symbionts of Cephalotes ants, with different distribution patterns. Some symbionts may maintain a close spatial proximity in the gut and possess BGCs, while others may exist alone and lack BGCs.
