Community-level responses of African carnivores to prescribed burning

Laura C. Gigliotti et al.

Summary: This study focused on the impact of fires on carnivores in South Africa, revealing that fire did not promote all carnivores to increase the use of burned areas. While apex predators like lions responded positively to prey-rich burnt areas, other large carnivore species exhibited neutral responses, and medium- to small-sized carnivores had species-specific, both neutral and positive responses. Positive responses to fire by lions were short-lived, emphasizing the complexity of understanding carnivore responses to fire.

A review of the responses of medium- to large-sized African mammals to fire

Willem A. Nieman et al.

Summary: Body size of mammals is strongly correlated with their response to fire, with smaller grazers more likely to occupy burned areas. Research suggests that managers should aim to promote spatial heterogeneity through controlled fire application.

The diversity of post-fire regeneration strategies in the cerrado ground layer

Natashi A. L. Pilon et al.

Summary: Understanding how ground-layer plant communities respond to fire in savanna ecosystems is crucial for conservation. This study found that prescribed fire can change community structure in the short term, but most species recover quickly, showing resilience to fire. Recovery involved different strategies grouped into five functional groups, providing valuable insights for conservation and restoration efforts in fire-resilient ecosystems in the cerrado.

Fire Occurrence Mediates Small-Mammal Seed Removal of Native Tree Species in a Neotropical Savanna

Thayse Cavicchioli Cazetta et al.

Summary: Seed removal rates were reduced in forests with a history of burning, with larger vertebrates playing a significant role in seed dispersal. The effects of fire were consistent across species, but particularly impacted those with the largest seeds. The decline in seed predation by small rodents in burned forests could have long-term consequences on plant communities and species coexistence.

Managing fires in a changing world: Fuel and weather determine fire behavior and safety in the neotropical savannas

Ana Carla dos Santos et al.

Summary: Fire is an essential ecological disturbance, but human-induced wildfires are increasingly posing threats to native ecosystems and human lives. With climate change and deforestation altering the roles of environmental drivers in fire behavior, reassessing the main determinants of fire behavior is crucial for safe and adaptive fire management planning. Our study highlights the significance of environmental variables, particularly humidity, temperature, wind speed, and fuel load, in predicting fire behavior and underscores the importance of considering these factors in fire management strategies in the context of a changing climate.

Understanding Brazil's catastrophic fires: Causes, consequences and policy needed to prevent future tragedies

Vania R. Pivello et al.

Summary: The unprecedented wildfires in Brazil have caused immense damages and shocked the world. Understanding the causes and consequences is crucial for developing successful management strategies. Historical perceptions and policies related to fire use and management in Brazil also need to be examined. Our review aims to provide valuable insights for academics, environmental managers, and decision-and policy-makers to address the increasing fire outbreaks in Brazilian biomes.
