Genetics of Primary Aldosteronism

Ute Scholl

Summary: Primary aldosteronism is the most common cause of secondary hypertension, largely due to genetic mutations in ion channels and pumps. Somatic mutations are responsible for sporadic cases, while germline mutations cause familial hyperaldosteronism.

Summary: The estimated glomerular filtration rate decreases significantly after adrenalectomy in patients with primary aldosteronism. Predictors for this decline include preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate and hypokalemia.

Laparoscopic versus robotic adrenalectomy in pheochromocytoma patients

Gizem Isiktas et al.

Summary: This study compared the perioperative outcomes of patients with pheochromocytoma who underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) or robotic adrenalectomy (RA). The results showed that robotic-assisted surgery had advantages in terms of lower blood loss and shorter hospital stay. The disease-free and overall survival rates were similar between the two groups.

Whom Should We Screen for Cushing Syndrome? The Endocrine Society Practice Guideline Recommendations 2008 Revisited

Leah T. Braun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the screening for Cushing syndrome (CS) and found that certain symptoms, such as osteoporosis, adrenal incidentaloma, metabolic syndrome, myopathy, and the presence of multiple symptoms, were more common in patients with CS. However, obesity was more common in patients without CS. According to the 2008 Endocrine Society practice guideline, 68% of CS patients and 37% of patients without CS had typical chief complaints.

Summary: This study developed the ICARO questionnaire to investigate the prevalence of infections in patients with glucocorticoid disorders. The results showed a high prevalence of self-reported infections in these patients. The ICARO questionnaire could serve as a valuable tool for monitoring infections in various clinical settings.

Predictive model of hypertension resolution after adrenalectomy in primary aldosteronism: the SPAIN-ALDO score

Marta Araujo-Castro et al.

Summary: A predictive model was developed to predict the resolution of hypertension after adrenalectomy in patients with primary aldosteronism based on their presurgical characteristics. Female sex, use of two or fewer antihypertensive medications, hypertension grade 1, no type 2 diabetes, and nonobesity were identified as key factors in predicting hypertension cure. The model had a higher diagnostic accuracy compared to other existing models and can be a useful tool for preoperative patient counseling.
