Optimum orthogonally structured fins in charging enhancement of phase change materials (PCMs): PCMs? thermophysical properties effects

Benli Peng et al.

Summary: Optimizing the size of orthogonal fins is crucial to improve the average charging rate of phase change materials (PCMs). This study numerically investigates the effects of PCMs' thermophysical properties on the optimum dimension of orthogonal fins, and establishes prediction correlations between the two. The results show that the thermophysical properties of PCMs significantly influence the optimum dimension of orthogonal fins, and different properties have different influences.

Effect of the cooling clothing integrating with phase change material on the thermal comfort of healthcare workers with personal protective equipment during the COVID-19

Chenxi Hu et al.

Summary: Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial for protecting healthcare workers during COVID-19. Traditional cooling methods are ineffective, so a cooling clothing integrated with phase change material (PCM-CC) was proposed. Human experiments and questionnaires indicated that wearing PCM-CC alleviated heat symptoms associated with PPE and improved thermal comfort. PCM-CC reduced head and facial discomfort, improved thermal sensation, lowered skin temperatures, and proved effective in regulating temperature for healthcare workers during the pandemic.

Flame-retardant phase change material (PCM) for thermal protective application in firefighting protective clothing

Yun Su et al.

Summary: Phase change material (PCM) can enhance the thermal protection of clothing by adjusting heat transfer performance through thermal storage. A study was conducted to prepare PCM coated fabric with flame-retardant (FR) properties for firefighting protective clothing. The effects of FR type, FR content, and phase change temperature (PCT) on FR performance were analyzed. Experimental investigation revealed that the FR of organic silicon significantly reduced the heat release rate, while the phosphorus-nitrogen FR expanded the ignition time. The selection and configuration design of PCM coated fabric for firefighting protective clothing can benefit from this study.

Summary: Phase change materials (PCMs) can be used as a cost-efficient method for thermal energy storage. This study investigates the recent developments in using PCMs in multi-designed tubes and buildings and explores testing methods, other applications, and heat transfer improvements. The improvement of phase transition, thermal conductivity, and material compatibility are still necessary for the wider application of PCMs.
