Comparison of spherical harmonics method and discrete ordinates method for radiative transfer in a turbulent jet flame

Wenjun Ge et al.

Summary: This study systematically compared the accuracy and computational cost of the spherical harmonics method (PN) and the discrete ordinates method (DOM) for solving the radiative transfer equation (RTE). The results showed that both solvers performed better for optically thicker cases, with the accuracy of the PN method increasing with its order, while the accuracy of the DOM method increased linearly with the number of ordinates. The choice of solver had a noticeable impact on the temperature distribution of the flame. The computational costs of each solver were reported, and a time blending scheme to improve computational efficiency was demonstrated.

Temperature dependent radiative properties of semi-transparent fiberglass-epoxy composite materials from 20 °C to 200 °C

Florent Retailleau et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of temperature on the radiative properties of fiberglass-epoxy composites. It is found that the reflectance remains relatively constant below 150 degrees C and increases above this temperature. The transmittance increases with temperature, reaching a peak around 105-125 degrees C, and then decreases. The results show that the radiative properties are strongly dependent on temperature above 100 degrees C, mainly due to the resin refractive index and polymer chemical degradation.

A comparative study on dielectric and mechanical properties of porous β-Si3N4 ceramics by controlling porosity and microstructure

Haoqian Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the designed microstructures have a significant impact on the mechanical properties of porous Si3N4 ceramics, but a less obvious effect on the dielectric properties. The dielectric constant can be reliably designed based on the porosity, and the mechanical properties can be optimized through microstructure.

Temperature-controlled spectrophotometry: a simultaneous analysis of phase transition, thermal degradation and optical properties of semi-transparent composites from 20 °C to 450 °C

Florent Retailleau et al.

Summary: In this study, the Temperature-Controlled Spectrophotometry method was used to investigate the phase transitions, thermal degradation, and radiative properties of semi-transparent composites over a wide temperature range. The method involved measuring the transmittance and reflectance of the sample simultaneously, and an inverse method was employed to determine the transport effective radiative properties. The results provide valuable insights into the temperature-dependent behavior of polymer matrix based composites.

Puqing Jiang et al.

Summary: A new spatial-domain thermoreflectance (SDTR) method has been developed to measure the in-plane thermal conductivity of small-scale samples. This method can measure samples lacking in-plane symmetry and extends the limit of measurable thermal conductivity to as low as 1 W / (m.K), with high accuracy and ease of operation.

Real-time reconstruction of thermal boundary condition of porous media via temperature sequence

Zhi-Tian Niu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method is proposed to introduce geometric analytical formulas into the multi-scale heat transfer problem of porous materials. The time-varying heat flux of different materials is reconstructed based on measurement information obtained from temperature sequence in a short time. The effects of photothermal properties, porosity, scattering albedo, and specularity parameter on the accuracy and stability of the reconstructed heat flux are investigated.

Systematic investigations on doping dependent thermal transport properties of single crystal silicon by time-domain thermoreflectance measurements

Xuanhui Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermal transport properties of doped silicon using a femtosecond-laser time-domain thermoreflectance method. The results showed that heavily doped silicon had a 22% decrease in thermal conductivity compared to pure silicon. Theoretical calculations and measurements were used to analyze the factors affecting thermal transport in doped silicon. Additionally, measurements were conducted at low temperatures to determine the thermal conductivity of doped silicon samples and the interfacial thermal conductance between silicon and aluminum thin films. These systematic studies provide insights into microscale thermal transport and have implications for industrial applications of doped semiconductors.

Jingjing Chen et al.

Summary: The optical and radiative properties of alumina-silica-based ceramic materials were studied as a function of temperature. The results showed that the spectral normal emittance of the samples increased non-monotonically with the thermal treatment temperature and actual sample temperature, while the transport scattering albedo decreased with temperature. The absorptive index exhibited a non-monotonic increase with increasing sample temperature.

Summary: This study investigates the inverse estimation of temperature-dependent refractive index and absorption coefficient of semitransparent media. By simulating forward transient coupled radiation-conduction heat transfer using finite volume method, an improved teaching-learning-based optimization algorithm is developed for retrieving these properties.
