Fundamentals of window-ejected fire plumes from under-ventilated compartment fires: Recent progresses and perspectives

Xiepeng Sun et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent progresses in the study of window-ejected fire plumes and focuses on quantifying the behavior of these plumes under constrained conditions. The paper discusses the evolution of compartment fires, flame interaction and merging behavior, and characteristic parameters of window-ejected fire plumes. The limitations of current research and future challenges are also addressed.

Experimental and theoretical study on the characteristics of the spill plume in a compartment fire with high-low opposing openings

Jie Ji et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the characteristics of the spill plume in a compartment fire with high-low opposing openings. The study considers different sizes of doors and windows as well as varying heat release rates. By calculating the mass flow rates through the openings and deriving the expression of the neutral plane height, the calculated results show good agreement with experimental results. Furthermore, the paper reveals that the size variation of any opening affects the energy proportion, and the ratio of heat flow through openings can be represented by the 5/2 power of the ratio of the new length scales. A linear relationship between the fire spill plume thickness and the horizontal velocity of the plume ejected from the window is established, and the heat flux along the facade and the temperature distribution of the fire spill plume outside the window are given.

Investigation on vertical temperature profile of thermal ejected plume from a compartment fire with an adjacent side wall

Fang Gan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical temperature profile of thermal ejected plume from a compartment fire with an adjacent side wall, confirming that the side wall separation distance affects the vertical temperature profile only when it is below a critical value. A new correlation was proposed to describe the constraining effect of the side wall on the vertical temperature profile, and numerical simulation results were well collapsed by this correlation for various parameters.
