Mycoplasma miroungirhinis sp. nov. and Mycoplasma miroungigenitalium sp. nov., isolated from northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris), Mycoplasma phocoenae sp. nov., isolated from harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), and Mycoplasma phocoeninasale sp. nov., isolated from harbour porpoise and California sea lions (Zalophus californianus)

Dmitriy V. Volokhov et al.

Summary: In this study, seven novel independent strains of Mycoplasma species were isolated and characterized from northern elephant seals, a harbour porpoise, and a California sea lion. Based on phenotypic and genetic analyses, four new Mycoplasma species were proposed.

TYGS and LPSN: a database tandem for fast and reliable genome-based classification and nomenclature of prokaryotes

Jan P. Meier-Kolthoff et al.

Summary: Microbial systematics is influenced by genome-based methods and faces challenges from the increasing number of taxon names and associated sequences. Accurate and reliable high-throughput platforms like LPSN and TYGS are essential for handling the data efficiently. The updates include new features and expanded database content to provide easy access to the data.

Novel Lethal Clostridial Infection in Florida Manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris): Cause of the 2013 Unusual Mortality Event in the Indian River Lagoon

Jan H. Landsberg et al.

Summary: The Indian River Lagoon is an important habitat for the threatened Florida manatee. An investigation found that the cause of death in the manatee's unusual mortality event was associated with a clostridial infection, initiated by a shift to a predominantly macroalgal diet.

Mariniplasma anaerobium gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel anaerobic marine mollicute, and proposal of three novel genera to reclassify members of Acholeplasma clusters II-IV

Miho Watanabe et al.

Summary: A novel strictly anaerobic chemoorganotrophic bacterium, Mahy22(T), isolated from a shallow brackish meromictic lake in Japan, showed unique morphology and growth conditions. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene placed the strain in a new genus, Mariniplasma anaerobium gen. nov., distinct from other Acholeplasma species.

Microbiome Composition and Function in Aquatic Vertebrates: Small Organisms Making Big Impacts on Aquatic Animal Health

Ludek Sehnal et al.

Summary: This critical review synthesizes research on the microbiota of aquatic vertebrates and discusses the impact of emerging stressors on aquatic microbial communities. The structure and function of microbial communities in fish and marine mammals are influenced by environmental factors, with unique compositions found in different species. Understanding the functional relevance of microbial communities is crucial for monitoring water quality and population health in aquatic ecosystems.

MEGA11 Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis Version 11

Koichiro Tamura et al.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
