Experimental study on adaptive-passive tuned mass damper with variable stiffness for vertical human-induced vibration control

Liangkun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, an adaptive-passive variable stiffness tuned mass damper (APVS-TMD) is proposed to solve the mistuning problem of a passive TMD. The stiffness and frequency of the APVS-TMD can be retuned by changing the length of the cantilever beam and adjusting the air gap between the conductor plate and magnets. Numerical simulation and experimental verification show that the APVS-TMD can accurately identify the decoupled structural natural frequency and effectively control human-induced vibrations.

Development and robustness investigation of track-based asymmetric nonlinear energy sink for impulsive response mitigation

Jingjing Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, track asymmetric nonlinear energy sinks (TANESs) are proposed to enhance energy and frequency-related robustness in engineering structures. The theoretical model of TANESs is developed and validated through experiments, and the performance of TANESs under different excitation conditions is numerically investigated. The results show that TANESs can act as linear mass dampers and perform more effectively on frequency-decreased structures as the energy level increases.

Single and multiple TMD optimization to control seismic response of nonlinear structures

Martin Domizio et al.

Summary: Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are control devices used for energy dissipation in civil structures, and their effectiveness is influenced by the duration of dynamic excitation and detuning effect. This study optimized the parameters of three different TMD configurations using the particle swarm algorithm and evaluated their performance on single-degree-of-freedom structures under different ground motions. It was found that the configuration with two TMDs in series tuned to a frequency of 50% of the fundamental frequency of the healthy structure achieved the highest effectiveness when the ductility demand is greater than 5.

Analytical and numerical investigations of base isolation system with negative stiffness devices

Peng Chen et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative base isolation system using negative stiffness devices (NSDs) for seismic protection of structures. The theoretical dynamic solution is matched well with numerical simulation when the system nonlinearity is insignificant. Performance evaluation shows that the NSDs promote the isolation effect under minor and moderate earthquakes, reducing the large isolation deformation under major earthquakes, especially effective under near-field earthquakes.

Constant-ductility energy factors of SDOF systems subjected to mainshock-aftershock sequences

Duofa Ji et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the energy factor of single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems subjected to mainshock-aftershock (MSAS) sequences. It divides recorded MSAS sequences into four groups based on relative intensity and calculates constant-ductility inelastic spectra to assess the energy factor. The effect of various factors on the energy factor is thoroughly analyzed, and a predictive model is developed to facilitate energy-based seismic design of structures.

Summary: This study introduces a semi-active independent variable mass tuned mass damper (SAIVM-TMD) to solve pedestrian-induced vibration issues in pedestrian bridges. By using wavelet transform to identify the structural instantaneous frequency, the mass of the SAIVM-TMD is adjusted in real time to efficiently adapt to changes in structural vibrational frequency and retune, resulting in optimal performance.
