Twinning and antitwinning in body-centered cubic metals

Roman Groger et al.

Summary: Deformation twinning in body-centered cubic (BCC) metals occurs by shearing the crystal along specific planes, and recent studies have shown that antitwinning shear can lead to twinning in some BCC metals. Molecular statics simulations reveal that twinning can occur on both twinning and antitwinning shear in transition metals, but only on twinning shear in alpha-Fe and alkali metals. TEM diffraction pattern analyses further confirm the existence of regular twins along antitwinning shear in Nb and Cr, and exclusively on twinning shear in alpha-Fe.

A prospect of using ternary W-5 wt%V-5 wt%Ta alloy manufactured by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering as plasma-facing material

Hongjing Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, a ternary W alloy containing 5 wt% V and 5 wt% Ta was fabricated using mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The alloy exhibited a single-phase body centered cubic structure with (V, Ta)-enriched fine grains and W-enriched grains. It showed an ultrafine grain size and higher relative density, microhardness, and strength compared to pure W. The strengthening mechanisms were analyzed, and it was found that grain refinement, densification, and solid solution played different roles in strengthening. The alloy demonstrated good irradiation resistance, which was attributed to its ultrafine grains and higher compressive and tensile strength. The potential application of the W-5 wt%V-5 wt%Ta alloy as a plasma-facing material was suggested.

W-Cu/Cu composite electrodes fabricated via laser surface alloying

Hongbin Xie et al.

Summary: Laser surface alloying was employed to prepare a novel W-Cu/Cu composite with high W content on the surface but low W content for the whole composite, exhibiting a lower arc ablation rate than the commercial one. The study opens a door to overcome the trade-off of the ablation resistance and W consumption of the W-Cu electrodes.

Improved strength and heat transfer of W/Cu joints via surface nano-activation of W

Hanyu Wang et al.

Summary: This research presents a novel method for enhancing direct alloying of tungsten (W) and copper (Cu) using nanoporous structures, without using interlayer metals. The results show that surface nano-activation of W can significantly promote direct alloying, improve the tensile strength of W/Cu joints, and enhance their thermal diffusivity.

Fabrication and experimental investigation of arc erosion behavior in W/Cu functionally graded composites

Ramezan Ali Mahdavinejad et al.

Summary: This study proposed a functionally graded composite technique to produce W/Cu alloy electrical contact material, finding that the intermediate layer had completed the sintering process with low porosity and high hardness. It was also discovered that multi-layered FGC showed better erosion resistance, improved heat transfer, and reduced surface damage.

Summary: The (Zr, Ti)-doped W/Cu/Ni-based composite showed a completely compact structure and uniform element distribution after sintering, resulting in superior microhardness and improved electrical conductivity. The addition of Zr and Ti also decreased the mass loss of electric ablation, making these alloys promising for future electrical contact materials in electrical and electronic fields.

A novel approach to fabricate W-Cu functionally graded materials via sedimentation and infiltration method

Bangzheng Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, W-Cu functionally graded materials with continuously gradient distribution of W (Cu) composition and microstructure were fabricated using a novel method of sedimentation and melt-infiltration. The addition of an appropriate amount of PVB in the suspension was found to expand the gradient distribution range of W-Cu FGMs. The results show that the prepared W-Cu FGMs exhibit excellent performance in terms of hardness, density, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity.
