Achieving superb strength in single-phase FCC alloys via maximizing volume misfit

Zhongtao Li et al.

Summary: By maximizing the volume misfits, a single-phase Ni-based FCC alloy with a superb yield strength (-1.05GPa) and good ductility (37%) is designed. This study provides two surprising and novel findings for single-phase FCC alloys: volume misfit is a good relevant indicator of kHP, and screw dislocations can contribute to strengthening once the solute-induced stress field reaches a critical value.

A novel cobalt-free oxide dispersion strengthened medium-entropy alloy with outstanding mechanical properties and irradiation resistance

Ao Fu et al.

Summary: A novel cobalt-free oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) equiatomic FeCrNi medium entropy alloy (MEA) with highly dispersed oxide nanoparticles was successfully fabricated. The ODS FeCrNi MEA exhibited improved yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and adequate ductility retention compared to the conventional FeCrNi MEA. The introduction of high-density oxide nanoparticles contributed to the excellent irradiation resistance. These findings provide guidance for the development of high-performance structural materials for future nuclear energy applications.

Effects of Zr addition on lattice strains and electronic structures of NbTaTiV high-entropy alloy

Chanho Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of Zr leads to a transition in the mechanical response of NbTaTiV alloy from ductile to brittle behavior. Lattice-strain evolutions obtained from in-situ neutron diffraction for NbTaTiV alloy exhibit atypical plastic-deformation behavior.

Microstructure and mechanical property of NbTaTiV refractory high-entropy alloy with different Y2O3 contents

Tao Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, NbTaTiV refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) reinforced with dispersed oxides were successfully designed and fabricated. The effects of Y2O3 content on the microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically studied, showing that the oxide dispersion strengthening (ODS) RHEAs have excellent mechanical properties due to the multiscale oxides.

Enhanced high-temperature strength of HfNbTaTiZrV refractory high-entropy alloy via Al 2 O 3 reinforcement

Bingjie Wang et al.

Summary: Novel composites of HfNbTaTiZrV refractory high-entropy alloy (RHEA) reinforced with 0-4 vol.% Al2O3 particles have been synthesized, and their microstructure evolution, compressive mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures, as well as strengthening mechanisms have been analyzed. The addition of Al2O3 not only enhances the phase stability at elevated temperatures but also improves the compressive yield strength through multiple strengthening mechanisms.

Summary: The study shows that thermomechanical processing can lead to phase decomposition in refractory high entropy alloys, affecting both room temperature and high temperature mechanical properties; the impact of precipitates on room temperature strength depends on the competition between precipitation strengthening and solid solution strengthening.

Ultra-fine grain TixVNbMoTa refractory high-entropy alloys with superior mechanical properties fabricated by powder metallurgy

Qing Liu et al.

Summary: TixVNbMoTa refractory high-entropy alloys were prepared through MA and SPS, and the effect of Ti content on their microstructures and mechanical properties was investigated. Increasing Ti content resulted in larger grain sizes and volume fractions of the matrix and precipitation phases, while also decreasing the density of the alloys.

Strength can be controlled by edge dislocations in refractory high-entropy alloys

Chanho Lee et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the high strength of some new high-entropy alloys based on refractory elements at high temperatures is mainly attributed to edge dislocations, rather than traditional screw dislocations. Researchers have used this insight to identify over 10^6 possible ultra-strong high-temperature alloy compositions for future exploration.
