Effect of particles size of TiC on oxidation resistance of in-situ TiC/ Ni composite

Ziyan Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, in-situ TiC/Ni composites were fabricated by reactive sintering method, and the influence of TiC particle size on the oxidation resistance of the composites was investigated. The results showed that the increase in TiC particle size from 1.54 μm to 2.40 μm was due to the dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism as the sintering holding time prolonged from 2 h to 6 h. The oxidation kinetics of the composites followed parabolic kinetics when oxidized at 800 degrees C for 100 h. With the increase in TiC particle size, the oxidation mass gain of the composites increased from 7.471 mg·cm-2 to 8.454 mg·cm-2 and the oxide scale became thicker. The reduction in TiC particle size facilitated the formation of a dense and continuous oxide scale, which helped to restrict the diffusion of O, Ti, and Ni atoms during oxidation. Therefore, the reduction in TiC particle size contributed to the optimization of the oxidation resistance of the in-situ TiC/Ni composites.
