Nanosecond laser shock detonation of nanodiamonds: from laser-matter interaction to graphite-to-diamond phase transition

Xing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms behind nanomanufacturing of nanodiamonds during confined laser shock detonation (CLSD), focusing on the laser-matter interaction, the confining effect, and the graphite-to-diamond transition. Using simulations, the researchers reveal the influence of the confining effect on temperature, pressure, electron number density, and particle velocity. The integrated model can predict the laser energy threshold for nanodiamond synthesis and the efficiency of nucleation under different processing parameters.

Growth of highly oriented graphite by ultraviolet nanosecond pulsed laser ablation of monocrystalline diamond

Liang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focuses on inducing highly oriented graphite layer in diamond by laser ablation to enhance the electronic functionalities of monocrystalline diamond. Microgrooves with high precision and limited heat affected zone are fabricated on monocrystalline diamond using low cost ultraviolet nanosecond pulsed laser micromachining. A highly oriented graphite layer is formed between the top transformed amorphous layer and bottom pristine diamond, with visible regular boundaries among them.

Precision fabrication of diamond micro-optic elements with hybrid SiO2/Cr etching masks

Zhiqi Yang et al.

Summary: Here, we report a reliable fabrication method for diamond micro-structures using DLW and RIE, and demonstrate the fabrication of a laminar grating. A micro-masks-less and high-temperature diamond etching method with dielectric SiO2 mask and Cr adhesive layer is presented. Statistical analysis using Hough transform on SEM images is used to monitor the variation of structures during fabrication. The experimental results of diffraction are in close agreement with simulation results.

Precision truing of electroplated diamond grinding wheels via spray-mist-assisted laser technology

Qingyu Meng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel laser truing method with a spray-mist assistant (SMA), which addresses the problems of thermal damage and the metamorphic layer of diamond in traditional laser truing, improving the quality and precision of truing. The results show that the spray pressure and truing iterations have significant effects on the truing quality, and the influence of truing iterations can be divided into three stages. Moreover, the SMA laser truing method remarkably inhibits diamond graphitisation.

Experimental study on dressing concave trapezoidal diamond grinding wheel by electrical discharge grinding method

Longzhou Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, an electrical discharge grinding (EDG) method is proposed for dressing bronze bonded diamond grinding wheel. The method allows for the removal of non-conductive diamond abrasive particles, improving dressing efficiency. A three-dimensional heat conduction model is established to analyze the material removal mechanism in EDG dressing. Numerical simulation and optimized machining parameters are used to dress a high-precision concave isosceles trapezoidal grinding wheel. The dressing accuracy is evaluated through grinding a graphite plate.

Picosecond laser ablation of polycrystalline CVD diamond

Jianchao Zhai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of laser parameters on the surface characteristics of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond. Simulation is used to establish temperature field, thermal stress field, and phase field to explain the deterioration of diamond surface during laser machining. The results show that high temperature induced by laser and the local anisotropy of polycrystalline CVD diamond contribute to the uneven removal of materials, resulting in irregular gullies on the machined surface. The thermal effect of picosecond laser leads to the gasification of a large amount of material, with less accumulation in the processing area. Graphitization of diamond is induced in the groove, with less graphitization at the edge. Additionally, the CVD diamond surface undergoes oxidation and nitridation during laser ablation. By optimizing the machining parameters based on surface morphology and three-dimensional topography, different surface microstructures can be fabricated on CVD diamond.
