The vertical excitation energies and a lifetime of the two lowest singlet excited states of the conjugated polyenes from C2 to C22: Ab initio, DFT, and semiclassical MNDO-MD simulations

Katerina Fatkova et al.

Summary: Electronic excited states in the series of polyene molecules were investigated using various computational methods. PBE, TPSS, and BLYP functionals showed the best performance in predicting transition energies, while the OM2/MNDO method performed well in terms of root-mean-square deviation. Lifetimes of the first two excited states were estimated using a stochastic approach.

Can time-dependent double hybrid density functionals accurately predict electronic excitation energies of BODIPY compounds?

Wissam Helal et al.

Summary: The vertical excitation energies of 12 BODIPY chromophores were benchmarked using TD-DFT with most results showing overestimation. The DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 density functionals exhibited the smallest MAE values of 0.119 eV and 0.124 eV, respectively, along with good consistency and predictability.

Accurate predictions of the electronic excited states of BODIPY based dye sensitizers using spin-component-scaled double-hybrid functionals: a TD-DFT benchmark study

Qabas Alkhatib et al.

Summary: The vertical excitation energies of 13 BODIPY based dye sensitizers were benchmarked using TD-DFT with 36 different functionals. Most TD-DFT results overestimated the excitation energies, with mean absolute error values ranging from 0.2 to 0.5 eV. The dispersion-corrected, spin-component-scaled, double-hybrid functionals DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 had the smallest MAE values and showed excellent consistency and quality of results. However, range separated hybrid and range separated double hybrid functionals provided the best predictability.

Thermal Fluctuations in Conjugation and their Effect on Calculated Excitation Energies: A Case Study on the Astaxanthin Carotenoid

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: A study on the impact of thermal motion on the excitation energies of astaxanthin found that thermal fluctuations can cause a significant shift in the excitation energy. It is concluded that thermal motion can have a large effect on the excitation energies of conjugated systems, even for molecules with distinct potential-energy minima.

Double Hybrid Density Functionals for the Electronic Excitation Energies of Linear Cyanines

Wissam Helal

Summary: In this study, the lowest excited electronic states of seven model linear cyanines were benchmarked against accurate CC3 results using various double-hybrid (DH) density functionals. Different basis sets and ab initio methods were also tested. It was found that augmented basis sets were necessary for accurate results with DH functionals. Among the tested DH functionals, the SCS/SOS-RSDH group provided the lowest mean absolute error values. The study concluded that the DH functionals SCS-omega B2GPPLYP, SOS omega B2GPPLYP, SOS-omega B88PP86, and SOS-omega PBEPP86 were the most accurate and consistent.

Tuning the photophysical properties of BODIPY dyes used in DSSCs as predicted by double-hybrid TD-DFT: The role of the methyl substituents

Wissam Helal et al.

Summary: A series of BODIPY dyes for DSSC applications were designed to achieve a controlled red-shift in their absorption band maxima by changing the number and position of substituted methyl groups. The excited-state properties of these dyes were predicted and analyzed, showing a gradual red-shift in the lowest electronic excitation energy as the methyl groups were replaced by hydrogens. This substitution also led to increased charge transfer character, enhanced excited-state lifetimes and electron transport abilities, while slightly reducing the light harvesting efficiency and electron injection free energy.

Assessment of time-dependent density functionals for the electronic excitation energies of organic dyes used in DSSCs

Qabas Alkhatib et al.

Summary: The absorption spectra of dye sensitizers used in dye-sensitized solar cells were simulated using time-dependent (TD)-DFT with different functionals. However, most TD-DFT results showed significant errors in the calculated excitation energies. The double-hybrid functional B2GPPLYP performed the best among all the functionals, while other functionals such as M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and BH&HLYP also showed good performance. Range separated hybrid functionals and range separated double hybrid functionals were not recommended for predicting excited state properties of organic dye sensitizers.

Extendedtight-bindingquantum chemistry methods

Christoph Bannwarth et al.

Summary: This review discusses a family of atomistic, mostly quantum chemistry based semiempirical methods for describing large molecules in gas and condensed phase. These methods are derived from a density functional perturbation expansion and emphasize parameter availability for almost the entire periodic table, with improvements in atomic orbital basis set and interaction treatments. The methods are consistent with accurate gas phase theoretical reference data and have been extended for electronic spectra and response properties.

A Simple Range-Separated Double-Hybrid Density Functional Theory for Excited States

David Mester et al.

Summary: A simple and robust range-separated double-hybrid time-dependent density functional approach is proposed for accurate calculation of excitation energies. The new approach shows improvement over standard double hybrids and provides a more robust and accurate alternative in most cases, surpassing existing range-separated hybrid and double-hybrid functionals on average.

Summary: This study presents new LC double hybrids with SCS/SOS that demonstrate further improvement over previously published results and methods, showing highly efficient and robust performance for vertical excitation energies. Among them, the SCS/SOS-omega PBEPP86 and SCS/SOS-omega B88PP86 functionals are identified as four of the most accurate and robust methods, recommended for future applications.

The Trip to the Density Functional Theory Zoo Continues: Making a Case for Time-Dependent Double Hybrids for Excited-State Problems

Lars Goerigk et al.

Summary: This account provides a detailed review of time-dependent double-hybrid density functionals, showing their superiority in reproducing exciton-coupled absorption spectra for a variety of electronic excitations in organic molecules compared to conventional TD-DFT methods. While there is still room for improvement and further development, the latest advancements in this field have shown unprecedented robustness. Encouraging users to adjust their computational protocols to these new methods will provide more real-life testing and scenarios.
