Mixed 5f atomic configurations in two polymorphic forms of uranium pentafluoride

Ru-song Li et al.

Summary: A first principles calculation is performed on two polymorphic forms of uranium pentafluoride, suggesting that both phases are in weakly correlated states. The appropriate coupling scheme for uranium 5f electrons is verified. Occupation probability analysis reveals that the uranium ions mainly consist of mixed atomic configurations, and the occupation numbers are influenced by quantum mechanics processes and the flexible outer electronic configuration of the ions. Finally, the momentum-resolved electronic spectrum function is estimated for comparison with experimental results.

Temperature-dependent electronic properties for 4f states in cerium mononitride

Ru-song Li et al.

Summary: By using a many-body scheme combining density functional theory with dynamical mean field theory, taking into account the spin-orbit coupling and on-site Coulomb repulsion, the temperature-dependent occupancy number of Ce 4f electrons and valence state of Ce ions in cerium mononitride (CeN) are investigated. The results show that Ce 4f j = 5/2 and j = 7/2 manifolds undergo an insulating-metallic transition with increasing temperature. The hybridization of Ce 4f-conduction electrons, f-f correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and final state effects contribute to the complex spectrum function in CeN. The atomic configuration transition and hybridization of Ce 4f might be responsible for the temperature-dependent occupancy number of Ce 4f electrons and the mixed-valence state in CeN.

Structure-Dependent Phase Diagram of the Occupation Number of 4f Electrons in Cerium Monoarsenide

Ru-Song Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the structure-dependent correlation strength and occupation number of 4f electrons in cerium monoarsenide (CeAs) with different crystal structures were investigated using a first principles calculation method. The results show that the lattice constants have a significant impact on the behavior and occupation number of 4f electrons in CeAs.

Pronounced Pressure Dependence of Electronic Transitions for Americium Compared to Isomorphous Neodymium and Samarium Mellitates

Joseph M. Sperling et al.

Summary: The study focused on an americium mellitate compound and compared it to isomorphous neodymium and samarium mellitates. Results showed that the pressure dependence of the f→f transitions in the americium compound was significantly greater, indicating a different effect on the 5f orbitals compared to the 4f orbitals when pressure is applied.

Intermediate occupation numbers for 5f electrons in a Pu and U mixed oxide

Ru-song Li et al.

Summary: A first principles calculation was performed to study the electronic properties of Pu/U ions in a (Pu,U) mixed oxide-PuUO4, revealing that Pu 5f and U 5f occupation numbers are in moderately and weakly correlated states, with little influence from the lattice sites of Pu and U ions in PuUO4.

Covalency in AnCl3 (An = Th-No)

Sophie Cooper et al.

Summary: The geometric and electronic structures of AnCl(3) were computationally studied using hybrid density functional theory (PBE0), revealing that the An-Cl bond lengths generally decrease across the 5f series, with later bonds showing less ionic character than expected. The covalency of the An-Cl bond was found to be dependent on the metric used for evaluation and the underlying electronic structure method, indicating larger energy degeneracy-driven covalency in the later actinides when using the generalised gradient approximation PBE functional compared to hybrid DFT.
