Racial differences in sympathetic nervous system indicators: Implications and challenges for research

Li Shen Chong et al.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests racial differences in sympathetic nervous system (SNS) functioning, but the specific nature and consistency of these differences remain unclear. This systematic review examines the racial differences in commonly used resting SNS indices, such as electrodermal activity (EDA), pre-ejection period (PEP), and salivary alpha-amylase (sAA). The review finds that Black participants consistently exhibit lower resting EDA compared to White participants, while findings regarding racial differences in PEP and sAA are mixed. Various factors, including index-specific factors, lab confounds, and psychosocial environmental factors, may contribute to racial differences in SNS activity. This framework provides insights into the possible reasons for racial differences and highlights the need for future research and recommendations.

Harsh Parenting and Children's Aggressive Behavior: A Moderated Mediation Model

Bowen Liu et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between harsh parenting, children's aggressive behavior, normative beliefs about aggression, and regulatory emotional self-efficacy, as well as their mechanisms of interaction. The results indicate that harsh parenting has a significant positive predictive effect on children's aggressive behavior, with normative beliefs about aggression mediating this relationship and regulatory emotional self-efficacy playing a moderating role. These findings provide insights into the integrated model of emotion processes and cognition in understanding the relationship between harsh parenting and children's aggressive behavior, and offer practical ways to prevent and intervene in children's aggressive behavior in the future.
