Nanograin formation and cracking mechanism in Ti alloys under very high cycle fatigue loading

Chengqi Sun et al.

Summary: This paper reveals that nanograins are present in locally high-stress areas during the very high cycle fatigue of TC17 alloy, and nanograin formation is mainly attributed to twinning. The locally high stress induces twinning or slip in preferentially oriented alpha grains. Subsequently, the interaction between twin systems or dislocations leads to the formation of dislocation cells or walls, initiation of microbands, and ultimately the formation of nanograins. As a result, the regions with nanograins and the boundaries between the nanograin and coarse grain regions become preferential sites for crack initiation and early growth. Finite element analysis demonstrates the fatigue cracking behavior related to nanograins.

Multi-scale investigation of short-range order and dislocation glide in MoNbTi and TaNbTi multi-principal element alloys

Hui Zheng et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of short-range ordering (SRO) on dislocation glide in MoNbTi and TaNbTi RMPEAs is investigated using a multi-scale modeling approach. The results show that MoNbTi exhibits a higher degree of SRO than TaNbTi, and the local composition directly affects the unstable stacking fault energies (USFEs). Increasing SRO leads to higher mean USFEs and stress required for dislocation glide. Gliding dislocations experience significant hardening due to pinning and depinning caused by random compositional fluctuations, with higher SRO decreasing the degree of USFE dispersion and amount of hardening. Lastly, the applied stress is shown to affect the morphology of an expanding dislocation loop.

Enhanced strength-ductility synergy via novel bifunctional nano-precipitates in a high-entropy alloy

Liyuan Liu et al.

Summary: A new Ni-35(CoFe)(55)V5Nb5 high-entropy alloy with a novel bifunctional L-12-Ni3Nb nano-precipitate was developed to enhance the strength and ductility synergy of the alloy, showing high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and remarkable elongation. The novel nano-precipitates play a dual role in improving the alloy properties through precipitation strengthening and lowering the stacking fault energy for better work-hardening ability and plasticity.

Atomistic interpretation of extra temperature and strain-rate sensitivity of heterogeneous dislocation nucleation in a multi-principal-element alloy

Shi-Cheng Dai et al.

Summary: The incipient plasticity of crystals is influenced by pre-existing crystalline defects, which are formed during materials fabrication and processing and closely related to the mechanical properties. Through atomistic exploration and continuum-level mechanistic modeling, this study investigates the nucleation behavior of heterogeneous dislocations in different materials and reveals the extra thermal softening and strain-rate sensitivity in a multi-principal-element alloy, which can be attributed to the high total entropy and small activation volume of the alloy.

Developing a low-alloyed fine-grained Mg alloy with high strength-ductility based on dislocation evolution and grain boundary segregation

Zhi Zhang et al.

Summary: A new low-alloyed Mg-2Sm-0.8Mn-0.6Ca-0.5Zn alloy is prepared by low-temperature and low-speed extrusion, which exhibits high strength but low ductility. After annealing, the alloy shows both high strength and high ductility due to the effective inhibition of grain growth by grain boundary co-segregation and decreased dislocation density. The evolution of immovable long dislocations towards new grain boundaries is a key factor for the remarkable increase of ductility in the annealed alloy.

Hierarchical twinning governed by defective twin boundary in metallic materials

Qi Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the intrinsic deformability of defective twin boundaries in metallic materials and finds that inherent kinks on twin boundaries can facilitate the formation of secondary and hierarchical nanotwins. This defect-driven hierarchical twinning propensity is critically dependent on the kink height and is generally applicable in various metals and alloys.

Misorientation-dependent transition between grain boundary migration and sliding in FCC metals

Qishan Huang et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries play a crucial role in the mechanical behaviors of nanocrystalline materials, and their deformation mechanisms are closely related to grain boundary misorientation. In this study, the relationship between grain boundary misorientation and deformation mechanisms was investigated through large-scale molecular dynamic simulations in face-centered cubic metals. An energetic model was developed to predict the critical grain boundary misorientation at which grain boundary sliding surpasses grain boundary migration.

Multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics study of gradient nano-grained materials

Songjiang Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of gradient nano-grained (GNG) aluminum using three-dimensional multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD). The results show that GNG samples exhibit higher yield stress and strain hardening compared to the rule of mixtures, indicating a synergetic strengthening effect. The study also establishes a theoretical model that successfully describes the Bauschinger effect in GNG and uniform nano-grained (UNG) samples based on the evolution of dislocations during unloading.

Summary: Research has shown that increasing the number of elements in high-entropy alloys does not necessarily improve their structural properties, with low- and medium-entropy alloys sometimes exhibiting superior hardness and Young's modulus. The predominant strengthening mechanisms in multicomponent alloys are intrinsic lattice distortion and cohesive energies derived from mixing multiple atom types.
