The importance of interfacial stress-affected zone in evading the strength-ductility trade-off of heterogeneous multi-layered composites

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the presence of the interfacial stress-affected zone (ISAZ) was confirmed and the stress evolution process of Ti/Al multi-layered composites was quantified using in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction and in situ neutron diffraction. The results showed that the ISAZ spanned 15 μm and remained unchanged regardless of the load and layer thickness. The mechanical properties of the model material were optimized when the Al layer thickness was nearly twice the ISAZ size of 15 μm.

Dual enhancement in strength and ductility of Ti-V-Zr medium entropy alloy by fracture mode transformation via a heterogeneous structure

Shuting Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, Ti-V-Zr medium entropy alloys with short-range clustering (SRC) and heterogeneous grain structures (HGS) are designed and prepared. The strength and ductility of Ti40Zr60-xVx alloys are enhanced by increasing the proportion of V, leading to a high yield tension strength of 1067 MPa and ductility of >7% at room temperature for Ti40Zr15V45 alloy. The thermodynamic stability of phases and dislocation reactions contribute to the overall improvement in strength and ductility.

Simultaneously enhancing strength and ductility of HCP titanium via multi-modal grain induced extra dislocation hardening

Lei Gu et al.

Summary: According to Conside`re necking criterion, increasing the strength of a material will decrease its ductility, even if the strain hardening rate remains the same. Traditional strengthening mechanisms such as grain refinement and deformation reduce ductility while increasing yield strength. Heterostructures have shown potential in reducing ductility loss but still have lower ductility compared to coarse-grained counterparts. In this study, a bulk heterostructured Ti with a uniform multi-modal grain size distribution was fabricated and exhibited high yield strength, ductility, and an outstanding hardening effect. The improvement in ductility was attributed to the presence of maximum interface density and extra strain hardening caused by hetero-deformation induced dislocation pile-ups.

Programming Crystallographic Orientation in Additive-Manufactured Beta-Type Titanium Alloy

Xuan Luo et al.

Summary: A technique called multitrack coupled directional solidification (MTCDS) has been developed to program crystallographic orientation along an arbitrary 3D direction in beta-type Ti-Nb-Zr-Ta alloys. MTCDS is achieved through directional solidification of coupled multi-track melt pools with a specific temperature gradient direction, resulting in continuous epitaxial growth of the beta-Ti phase and setting the crystallographic orientation. This technique allows for customization of relatively low elastic modulus values along an arbitrary 3D direction. It is expected to have wide applications for programming specific crystallographic orientations and tailoring desired properties of metallic materials.

Simultaneously enhanced strength-plasticity of graphene/metal nanocomposites via interfacial microstructure regulation

Yang Sun et al.

Summary: Interfacial microstructure characteristics play a crucial role in the mechanical properties of graphene/metal nanocomposites. This study investigates the effects of different interfacial characteristics on improving both strength and plasticity simultaneously, providing a new perspective for optimizing the tensile properties of these nanocomposites. Through a multiscale theoretical framework and experimental verification, the study analyzes the impact of micromechanical variables on the maximum strength and failure strain of nanocomposites.

Design of high strength and wear-resistance β-Ti alloy via oxygen-charging

Xiu-Qun Wang et al.

Summary: Titanium is a promising biomedical material due to its corrosion resistance, low elastic modulus, and biocompatibility. However, its inferior abrasion performance and strength-ductility trade-off limit its application as biomedical implants. Researchers have developed an oxygen-charging method to fabricate a beta-Ti alloy with ultrahigh surface hardness, strength, toughness, and wear resistance. The unique oxygen gradient distribution in the alloy contributes to its superior mechanical performance, resisting surface crack propagation and catastrophic failure.

Overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off by tailoring grain-boundary metastable Si-containing phase in β-type titanium alloy

X. Luo et al.

Summary: By tailoring the grain-boundary metastable phase, we successfully prepared TNZTS alloy with excellent mechanical properties, where the reinforcement effect of globularized metastable phases was significant. Through quantitative analysis of the experimental results, we found that the strengthening mechanism mainly comes from the precipitated silicide and the dislocations induced by high cooling rate.

The influence of stacking faults on mechanical behavior of advanced materials

Ruizhe Su et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the influence of stacking faults on mechanical behavior of metallic or ceramic materials becomes prominent when their density increases sharply, sometimes dominating in some cases. This article reviews how nanoscale stacking faults impact the mechanical behavior of these materials, focusing on their formation, interactions with dislocations, and phase transformations during plastic deformation. The aim is to highlight the potential opportunities in using stacking faults to tailor the deformation mechanisms of advanced materials.

Summary: In this study, by manipulating the microstructural heterogeneities of metastable beta-Ti alloys, a controllable activation sequence of deformation mechanisms was achieved. The results showed that dislocation engineering and heterostructure design were effective strategies to improve the strength-ductility balance in these alloys.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of in-situ Ti6Al4V-TiB composites manufactured by selective laser melting

Zhiguang Zhou et al.

Summary: In situ TiB reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated via selective laser melting, with optimized processing to achieve crack-free and fully dense composites. The distribution of TiB reinforcement in the composites was mainly in the form of whisker clusters, showing different distributions in TMC1 and TMC2. The improvement in mechanical properties of the composites was attributed to Hall-Petch strengthening and load-bearing transformation strengthening.

Ultrafine grained metals and metal matrix nanocomposites fabricated by powder processing and thermomechanical powder consolidation

Deliang Zhang

Summary: This paper reviews the successful fabrication of ultrafine grained metals and metal matrix nanocomposites with enhanced strength and good tensile ductility through processing and thermomechanical consolidation of powders. The synergistic effects of grain boundary strengthening and intragranular ceramic nanoparticles are highlighted as crucial for significantly improving tensile yield strength while maintaining good tensile ductility. The introduction of extra boundaries between hard and soft regions in the material's microstructure further enhances strength without sacrificing ductility, although it requires careful management to prevent weakening effects on the hard regions.
