Micromechanical modeling of single crystal and polycrystalline UO2 at elevated temperatures

Matti Lindroos et al.

Summary: A crystal plasticity model is proposed for modelling the mechanical behavior of polycrystalline UO2. The model includes a dislocation-density-based formulation with three slip families and their interactions. It is parametrized using single crystal and polycrystal experimental data and evaluated for yield point, strain hardening behavior, temperature and strain rate dependencies. The effect of porosity on homogenized macroscopic stress-strain behavior and stress/strain localization at the grain level is analyzed.

Plastic anisotropy and composite slip: Application to uranium dioxide

Ronan Madec et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of UO2 single crystal, especially the unexpected multi-slip observations, has been studied in this research. A multi-scale model based on composite slip is proposed, in which dislocation density can be transferred from primary slip systems to secondary systems under the effect of cross-slip. This approach accurately describes the anisotropic mechanical response of UO2 single crystal, providing new insights into the links between dislocation microstructures and mechanical properties. The composite slip mechanism appears to be a candidate for explaining unexpected plastic behaviors in complex materials with multiple slip modes, suggesting that slip activation may be more complex than in usual constitutive laws.

Elevated Temperature Nanoindentation Creep Study of Plastically Deformed and Spark Plasma Sintered UO2

David Frazer et al.

Summary: The current challenges with uranium dioxide fuel degradation, specifically fuel swelling, cracking, and fission gas release, reduce the operational lifespan of commercial reactors. To prolong the lifespan of UO2 fuel, it is important to understand the mechanical properties of the high burnup structure that forms during the fuel cycle. Testing techniques like nanoindentation can be used to measure properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, and creep in UO2 samples with different microstructures. Test results show that different microstructures exhibit varying creep mechanisms, with nanocrystalline UO2 showing limited to no creep and samples with higher dislocation defect densities having lower creep stress exponents.
