Dynamic recrystallization in face-centered cubic particles during high-velocity impacts

David Funes Rojas et al.

Summary: In this work, dynamic recrystallization of nano-and micro-particles is investigated through high-velocity impact simulations. The results reveal that face-centered cubic particles recrystallize upon reaching a critical velocity, generating high misorientation angle grains. The pressure wave decay leads to grain size reduction and the formation of a new microstructure with spatial gradients within the particles. This behavior is universal for six representative face-centered cubic materials.

Multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics study of gradient nano-grained materials

Songjiang Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of gradient nano-grained (GNG) aluminum using three-dimensional multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD). The results show that GNG samples exhibit higher yield stress and strain hardening compared to the rule of mixtures, indicating a synergetic strengthening effect. The study also establishes a theoretical model that successfully describes the Bauschinger effect in GNG and uniform nano-grained (UNG) samples based on the evolution of dislocations during unloading.

Simulation of dislocation evolution in microparticle impacts over a wide range of impact velocities

Kevin Larkin et al.

Summary: The dynamic loading environment created by high velocity microparticle impacts is difficult to model due to the complex effects of strain rates, deformations, and temperatures on the material's flow stress. To accurately describe dislocation glide and evolution in microparticle impact problems, a newly proposed flow stress model is implemented and coupled with mobile and immobile dislocation density evolution equations. This model allows for accurate simulation of particle rebound and flattening across a wide range of impact velocities.

Grain boundary mediated plasticity: A blessing for the ductility of metallic thin films?

Jan P. Liebig et al.

Summary: The limited ductility of metallic thin films poses a challenge for MEMS and flexible electronics applications, but high ductility can be achieved through a combination of ultra-thin thickness and specific microstructure. The primary mechanisms of ductility are grain boundary sliding and grain boundary migration, which delay necking and achieve high ductility. This study opens promising prospects for developing ductile metallic films through microstructural engineering.

Dynamic recrystallization of Silver nanocubes during high-velocity impacts

David Funes Rojas et al.

Summary: The study investigates microstructural evolution of Silver single-crystal nanocubes during high-velocity impacts, revealing that certain orientations can develop intricate microstructures through simultaneous activation of multiple slip systems, leading to dislocation avalanches. Dynamic recrystallization is promoted by severe plastic deformation, while phase transformation to a more stable crystalline phase is triggered by thermalized simulations. The results provide insights into factors promoting dynamic recrystallization and offer a pathway for simultaneous control of microstructure and atomic structure by orienting nanocubes during impact.

Origins of size effects in initially dislocation-free single-crystal silver micro- and nanocubes

Claire Griesbach et al.

Summary: The study found remarkable yield strengths and massive strain bursts in initially dislocation-free silver micro- and nanocubes. Regardless of the defect state of the samples prior to testing, a size effect was observed, with yield strength increasing as the sample size decreased.
