Integrated experimental-numerical investigation of strain partitioning and damage initiation in a low-carbon lath martensitic steel

Fabien Briffod et al.

Summary: Lath martensite, a key component of advanced high strength steels, undergoes deformation through interface sliding, and its ductility can be improved by understanding the deformation and damage initiation mechanisms. An integrated experimental-numerical investigation of a low-carbon lath martensitic steel was proposed to study the plastic strain field distributions and the predictive capabilities of crystal plasticity models. Severe strain localization was observed along block boundaries, packet interfaces, prior austenite grain boundaries, and annealing twin boundaries. The relationship between strain localization sites and local micro-mechanical fields, such as stress triaxiality, was discussed.

Quantitative investigation of strain partitioning and failure mechanism in ultrafine grained medium Mn steel through high resolution digital image correlation

Wujun Yin et al.

Summary: Ultrafine grained medium Mn steel exhibits high strength and ductility but often shows Luders deformation and discontinuous yielding phenomena. The connections between martensite transformation and Luders deformation as well as the localized failure behavior are quantitatively investigated through high resolution digital image correlation. The microscopic deformation mode promotes the formation of macroscopic deformation bands, resulting in Luders band initiation and propagation.

Automated identification of slip system activity fields from digital image correlation data

T. Vermeij et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel slip system identification framework called SSLIP, which matches the measured displacement gradient fields to the kinematics of theoretical slip systems based on crystal orientations. An optimization problem is solved for each data point to determine the amount of slip conforming to the measured kinematics, resulting in a slip activity field. The framework is demonstrated and validated on different metals, including challenging cases with complex slip mechanisms.

Automated slip system identification and strain analysis framework using high-resolution digital image correlation data: Application to a bimodal Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Haoyu Hu et al.

Summary: Statistical analysis of slip system identification and quantitative study on local plasticity is crucial in understanding deformation in polycrystalline metallic materials. This study introduces an automated framework, ASSISL, for slip system identification and strain localization analysis of slip bands using high resolution digital image correlation. The framework includes alignment of electron backscattered diffraction maps with strain field maps, slip band orientation identification, slip system assignment, and quantification of plasticity. The confidence of ASSISL is validated through comparisons with existing literature and examining reasons for incorrect slip system assignments. This framework provides a time-saving and automated method for analyzing slip activities in polycrystalline metals.

Effect of grain size on critical twinning stress and work hardening behavior in the equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy

Christian Wagner et al.

Summary: The effect of grain boundary strengthening on deformation twinning in the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy is unclear. Experimental results show that deformation twinning occurs above a critical stress, which is independent of temperature. The uniaxial twinning stress decreases with increasing grain size, suggesting that the resistance of grain boundaries against slip and twinning is similar.

An in situ investigation of neighborhood effects in a ferrite-containing quenching and partitioning steel: Mechanical stability, strain partitioning, and damage

Jiyun Kang et al.

Summary: Understanding the micromechanical consequences of TRIP-assisted steels is challenging due to the presence of multiple phase constituents and difficulties in resolving the transformation of sub-micron scale retained austenite. This study investigates the neighborhood effects on the micromechanical behaviors of multi-phase TRIP steel, revealing that retained austenite, bainite, and tempered martensite clusters behave similarly and undergo early transformation. Additionally, a neighborhood-induced effect is observed in ferrite grains, where lateral contraction is inhibited when neighbored by hard martensite, leading to local plane strain tension.

Nano-twinning and uncommon ??-martensite formation as a result of very high cycle fatigue of metastable austenitic stainless steel at 573 K

Marek Smaga et al.

Summary: The microstructural changes of cyclic loaded AISI 347 stainless steel were investigated to determine the true endurance limit at 573 K. Fatigue tests were conducted using stress control and a load frequency of 980 Hz. Even in specimens that reached the endurance limit at 5 x 10^8 cycles, local cyclic plastic deformation and slip bands formation were observed. Transmission electron microscopy revealed additional microstructural effects such as nano-twin formation and alpha '-martensite formation. However, the alpha '-martensitic transformation is not the main mechanism responsible for the observed true endurance limit in AISI 347 at 573 K.

Experimental investigation of early strain heterogeneities and localizations in polycrystalline α-Fe during monotonic loading

A. Berger et al.

Summary: The local strain and strain localization of a polycrystalline recrystallized alpha-Fe specimen were analyzed using in-situ optical based Digital Image Correlation and EBSD scan. The results show that the strain structure develops at a scale larger than the grain's and leads to strain localizations around grain boundaries.

Achieving excellent mechanical properties in type 316 stainless steel by tailoring grain size in homogeneously recovered or recrystallized nanostructures

Maowen Liu et al.

Summary: One way to achieve good comprehensive mechanical properties in metallic materials is to create a homogeneous nanocrystalline or ultrafine grained structure with low dislocation density. In this study, high pressure torsion deformation and annealing were used to obtain uniform microstructures with various grain sizes in 316 stainless steel. The scarcity of dislocations in the nanocrystalline/ultrafine grained regions resulted in significant enhancement in strength, in addition to the normal grain boundary hardening. The material exhibited outstanding mechanical performance, including high yield strength and exceptional strength-ductility synergy.

Effect of limited retained austenite on the strength-ductility trade-off in low-alloyed TRIP steel

Wujun Yin et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study was conducted on a low-alloyed TRIP steel with and without subzero treatment to investigate the TRIP effect on mechanical behaviors, strain partitioning, and fracture. It was found that subzero treatment increased the volume fraction of martensite, leading to improved tensile strength but reduced ductility. Two types of martensite transformation were observed, and a microstructure-based simulation model was developed to explain the enhancement in ductility.

Single-camera 3D-DIC system based on a fiber bundle

Han Tu et al.

Summary: A single-camera 3D-DIC system based on a fiber bundle was proposed to broaden the application range and make full use of the flexibility of the fiber bundle. The effectiveness of the method was verified through experiments, and factors affecting accuracy were analyzed along with corresponding optimization methods. The method has significant potential for determining 3D deformation in intense electromagnetic interference environment and under water due to its ability to isolate the imaging sensor from harsh environments.

Summary: Multi-phase metallic materials exhibit strain partitioning and localization during plastic deformation, but the understanding of high strain levels and spatial variations in strain path development at the micro-scale is lacking. A practical method using in-situ SEM mechanical tests of pre-strained samples has been developed to address these challenges, providing insights into the strain behavior at different deformation levels in dual-phase steel.
