Effect of loading path on grain misorientation and geometrically necessary dislocation density in polycrystalline aluminum under reciprocating shear

Wenkai Fu et al.

Summary: Through the study of crystal plasticity theory, it was found that in solid phase processing, regions with high misorientation and GND density first appear near grain boundaries and extend towards interior grains. The loading path affects plastic deformation accumulation and recovery, and thus affects dislocation evolution and misorientation.

Dynamic strain ageing in an AlMg alloy at different strain rates and temperatures: Experiments and constitutive modelling

Jianbin Xu et al.

Summary: Uniaxial tension tests were conducted on an AA5182-O sheet at different strain rates and temperatures to investigate the dynamic strain ageing. A modified constitutive model based on the mechanical threshold stress (MTS) framework was proposed and used to analyze the stress-strain response. The model successfully captured the dependence of strain rate sensitivity on strain, temperature, and strain rate, and provided a re-interpretation of the occurrence of stress serrations.

Mechanistic Origin of Orientation-Dependent Substructure Evolution in Aluminum and Aluminum-Magnesium Alloys

Aditya Prakash et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the role of magnesium (Mg) solute and deformation temperature on the orientation-dependent substructure evolution in aluminum (Al). The results showed that increased Mg-content led to the conversion of dislocation cell structures to dislocation tangles, while increased deformation temperature nullified the role of solute and made the substructures orientation independent. Numerical simulations further explored the mechanistic origin of the orientation dependence and revealed that the density of dynamic obstacles and sources determined the orientation dependence of substructure evolution.

Study of grain boundary orientation gradients through combined experiments and strain gradient crystal plasticity modeling

Namit Pai et al.

Summary: A combined experimental and strain gradient crystal plasticity framework is proposed to study the development of orientation and misorientation gradients at grain boundaries during plastic deformation. The presence of localized plastic deformation in the vicinity of grain boundaries, referred to as Near Boundary Gradient Zones (NBGZs), is observed through experimental and simulated results. The simulation results show that the Geometrically Necessary Dislocation (GND) density is correlated with local misorientation, while the Statistically Stored Dislocation (SSD) density is correlated with the effective plastic strain in NBGZs. Furthermore, a correlation between the length of NBGZs and grain size is also suggested by the results.

Prominent role of multi-scale microstructural heterogeneities on superplastic deformation of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy

Min Zha et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the superplastic response of a high solid solution Al-7Mg alloy processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) under uniaxial tension. The study reveals that the evolution of microstructural heterogeneities can be regulated to favor superplastic deformation, achieving impressive elongation of approximately 523%. The high superplasticity is attributed to the cooperated mechanism of dislocation slip accommodated by continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX) and grain boundary sliding (GBS) during deformation.

Slip band formation in low and high solute aluminum: a combined experimental and modeling study

Aditya Prakash et al.

Summary: Deformed microstructures with slip band formation were observed in commercial AA1050 and AA2219. Higher deformation temperatures increased A, decreased Z, and reduced γ(S)(LT). AA1050 had smaller λ and higher Z, while AA2219 showed higher γ(S)(LT), with finer λ grains exhibiting larger ingrain misorientations in AA1050.

Measurement of hardness and elastic modulus by load and depth sensing indentation: Improvements to the technique based on continuous stiffness measurement

P. Sudharshan Phani et al.

Summary: The method for measuring hardness and elastic modulus of small volumes of material through instrumented indentation was initially developed by Oliver and Pharr in their early works. This has led to advancements in the field of small scale nanomechanical testing, with improvements in measurement electronics allowing testing under a wider range of conditions. The article provides an updated overview of factors affecting precision and accuracy of nanoindentation test results, focusing on the continuous stiffness measurement technique (CSM) and presenting a step-by-step procedure for conducting CSM based tests, along with calibration procedures for optimal precision and accuracy. Additionally, an assessment and comparison of different testing procedures is presented.

Incipient dynamic recrystallization and adiabatic shear bands in Ti?7Al studied via in situ X-ray diffraction

D. J. Magagnosc et al.

Summary: The study reported the first in situ X-ray diffraction observations of DRX, revealing that DRX initiation is driven by accumulation of plastic strain rather than temperature rise. The results showed a continuous evolution of microstructure with increasing plastic strain, until reaching maximum stress.
