Glucose oxidase-loaded colloidal stable WS2 nanobowls for combined starvation/photothermal therapy of colorectal tumors

Zheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a chemical modification method to immobilize glucose oxidase (GOx) on the surface of a photothermal transducing agent for safe and combined starvation and photothermal therapy of colorectal tumors. Under near-infrared laser irradiation, the photothermal transducing agent generates thermal energy to locally kill colorectal cancer cells. The study is expected to provide a new avenue for the rational design of multifunctional nanotherapeutics for tumor therapy.

Biofilm Potentiates Cancer-Promoting Effects of Tumor-Associated Macrophages in a 3D Multi-Faceted Tumor Model

Yanlin Deng et al.

Summary: Components of the tumor microenvironment, such as tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), have a dual impact on tumor development and treatment. A novel bladder tumor model is developed to study the impact of bacterial distribution on immunomodulation within the tumor microenvironment. It is shown that biofilms induce inflammatory conditions that promote macrophage polarization towards a pro-tumor state. Additionally, extratumoral biofilms can shield tumors from immune attack by TAMs. These findings provide insights into the role of biofilm-mediated inflammation in tumor progression and suggest new therapeutic strategies.

Nanoparticle surface stabilizing agents influence antibacterial action

Thelma Ameh et al.

Summary: The antibacterial properties of silver and copper nanoparticles stabilized with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were investigated. CTAB stabilized nanoparticles showed higher antibacterial activity than PVP stabilized nanoparticles, with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values ranging from 0.003 mu M to 0.25 mu M for CTAB stabilized nanoparticles and from 0.25 mu M to 2 mu M for PVP stabilized nanoparticles. These surface stabilized metal nanoparticles can serve as effective antibacterial agents at low doses.

Duxin Sun et al.

Summary: Despite the implementation of many successful strategies, the majority of clinical drug development fails. This study suggests that current drug optimization strategies overlook tissue exposure/selectivity, leading to misleading drug candidate selection and impacting clinical efficacy/toxicity balance. The proposed structure-tissue exposure/selectivity-activity relationship (STAR) classification system aims to improve drug optimization and enhance the success rate of clinical drug development.
