Three-dimensional investigation of capturing particle considering particle-RBCs interaction under the magnetic field produced by an Halbach array

Leyla Ranjbari et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D model of capturing carrier particles in a branched vessel under a non-uniform magnetic field was investigated. The effects of various parameters on Capture Efficiency (CE) were studied, and it was found that particle diameter, magnetic intensity, and blood velocity had the greatest impact on CE.

Acoustic Aerosol Delivery: Assessing of Various Nasal Delivery Techniques and Medical Devices on Intrasinus Drug Deposition

Lara Leclerc et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of nasal delivery technique and nebulizing technologies on the targeting of maxillary sinuses with acoustic aerosol. Different devices and techniques were assessed, and the results showed that a closed soft palate and the PARI SINUS nebulizer yielded higher intrasinus aerosol deposition compared to other conditions. The choice of nebulizing technology and nasal delivery technique are crucial factors in improving aerosol deposition in the maxillary sinuses.

Summary: This study investigated the practice habits of nasal irrigation in infants among parents, childcare workers, and healthcare professionals in Belgium. The results showed significant variations in the frequency of irrigation, solution propulsion speed, and volume used, reflecting the absence of a standardized method of nasal irrigation.

The effect of inlet flow profile and nozzle diameter on drug delivery to the maxillary sinus

Oveis Pourmehran et al.

Summary: This paper examines the effect of turbulence and swirling in the inlet flow and the diameter of the nozzle on flow characteristics and particles' transport/deposition patterns in the nasal cavity and maxillary sinus. The results show that the nasal valve plays a key role in nasal resistance and the effect of turbulence at the inlet on drug delivery is negligible. Increasing flow swirl and decreasing nozzle diameter significantly improve particle deposition. The use of swirling flow and reduced nozzle diameter can increase drug delivery efficiency.

Pediatric paranasal sinuses-Development, growth, pathology, & functional endoscopic sinus surgery

Sophie Lee et al.

Summary: Paranasal sinuses are complex anatomical structures whose development and growth can be influenced by various factors. Understanding the embryology and development of normal pediatric paranasal sinuses helps in identifying pathological effects on the normal developmental process. Conditions like cystic fibrosis, chronic sinusitis, deviated nasal septum, and cleft lip and palate have been shown to impact paranasal sinus development to different extents. Knowledge about sinus anatomy and periods of rapid growth during childhood is clinically important, especially in the context of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). Limited evidence suggests that FESS may not significantly affect facial growth postoperatively, based on anthropomorphic measurements and clinical assessments of symmetry.

Eugenio De Corso et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of topical and systemic corticosteroids in Italian patients with CRSwNP. The majority of participants prescribed mometasone furoate, and believed that short-term systemic steroids should be used for symptom exacerbation. However, there were varying opinions on the duration and maximal dose of systemic steroids. Additionally, systemic corticosteroids only provided temporary benefit on smell recovery.

Summary: Nose-to-brain drug delivery is a new approach that allows medications to directly enter the brain. This study explores the use of acoustic radiation force as an alternative delivery method. The research shows that increasing the pulsating wave frequency can improve the delivery efficiency to the olfactory region.

Temporal and Permanent Changes Induced by Maxillary Sinus Lifting with Bone Grafts and Maxillary Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery in the Voice Characteristics-Systematic Review

Rafael Delgado-Ruiz et al.

Summary: This systematic review compiles the post-operatory complications of sinus elevation with bone grafting and functional endoscopic maxillary sinus surgery (FESS), including voice changes, and determines that those changes are temporary. The review found that complications are frequent after sinus lifting with bone grafts and FESS, while voice parameters are rarely evaluated after sinus lifting with bone grafts and no voice changes are reported. Voice changes that occur after FESS include decreased fundamental frequency, increased nasality, and nasalance, which are all transient.

Targeted Drug Delivery - From Magic Bullet to Nanomedicine: Principles, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

Ashagrachew Tewabe et al.

Summary: Nanomedicine is an advanced concept that uses targeted drug delivery systems to deliver drugs directly to specific areas in the body, reducing the amount of drug needed for treatment and overcoming the toxic effects of traditional drug delivery. This field involves various carrier systems, such as colloidal and multiparticulate carriers, polymers, and cellular/subcellular systems.

Current Perspective on Nasal Delivery Systems for Chronic Rhinosinusitis

Junhu Tai et al.

Summary: Chronic rhinosinusitis is commonly treated with topical drugs delivered through the nasal cavity. In addition to traditional medications, research is ongoing to explore novel topical agents. The effectiveness of nasal drug delivery is influenced by various factors related to fluid dynamics in the nasal cavity, highlighting the need for consideration of these factors.

Summary: Endotyping is now favored over phenotype-based classifications in the management of Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS), particularly in challenging cases with nasal polyposis. The latest update from EPOS2020 includes revised classifications and care pathways for rhinosinusitis. Balancing the responsibility of managing patients' upper airway while protecting themselves from droplet and aerosol transmission is crucial for physicians and rhinologists during the COVID-19 pandemic.
